#OwnIt

Meet Karoline Otavalo, a first-year master’s student in Public Relations!

Karoline is actively building her professional experience through her role as a Graduate Assistant with the Multicultural Student Affairs office in Student Affairs. In this position, she applies her public relations skills across event planning, communications, and promotional strategy.

She is currently part of the marketing and planning team for the Students of Culture Symposium (SOCS) taking place on February 28, 2026, where she assists with campaign development and promotional materials. Karoline has also supported other campus events, including the Alumni Bash, where she helped with event décor and networking while connecting with alumni. She values the collaborative and supportive environment of her team and the hands-on experience the role provides.

Karoline credits Toppel with helping her gain confidence as she prepares for her future career. Through practice interviews, cover letter reviews, pop-up events, and drop-in coaching, she has refined her resume and learned how to network with greater intention.

Piece of Advice:

“Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Ask questions, reach out to people, and take opportunities even if you feel nervous; growth happens when you give yourself the chance to try.”
