#KeepinIt100

Meet Andrea Godoy, a fourth-year student in the Biomedical Engineering and Industrial Engineering BS/MS 5-year program!

Andrea has gained valuable industry experience through internships and research. At Medtronic, she worked as a research & technology intern, where she worked with implantable cardiac monitors. Most recently, Andrea interned at Stryker, focusing on their MAKO orthopedic surgical robot. Additionally, she’s been conducting research on vagus nerve stimulation for spinal cord injury patients at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis since sophomore year.

Andrea says that the Toppel Career Center has played a crucial role in her journey by connecting her with alumni and providing resources like career fairs, panels, and professional development sessions. She emphasizes the importance of tapping into your network and utilizing tools like Cane2Cane and Toppel's website to find opportunities and grow professionally.

Piece of Advice:

"Pick peoples' brains! Seek knowledge from mentors, challenge yourself to learn new skills, and be proactive in growing your network. The resources are at your fingertips - use them to stand out."

Applying for Winter Internships on Handshake

Even though winter break may feel far off, now is the perfect time to start thinking about finding an internship for when you’re on break. Winter internships are similar to summer ones but are offered during the fall or winter months. Because they’re less common, they often have less competition and can offer more flexible, shorter hours.

Taking on a winter internship allows you to build valuable experience in a shorter timeframe, giving your resume a boost - especially if you're considering a summer internship later on. As with any internship, it’s smart to start your search early. So next time you’re searching for internships on Handshake, be sure to look at the start and end dates right under the job description to identify the winter internships right for you!

Tips for Getting a Job After College

Whether you’re graduating this year or four years from now, finding a job after college can feel overwhelming...but it doesn’t have to be that way. Even if you don’t feel ready, some of the main keys are to gain experience and network. You can network in many different ways, such as with friends, family, professors, or recruiters. Many job opportunities come from word of mouth, and the skills are what will back you up in the long run.

It’s also good to get on LinkedIn and make sure your profile highlights your skills and education, even if your work experience is lacking. Don’t stress about having the perfect resume; just tailor it to each job and focus on what you’ve done, even school projects or volunteering. Also, apply for internships or part-time jobs on Handshake - they may even lead to full-time positions later! If you want some tips on how to get a job after college, check out this article to learn more. And always remember that you can meet with a career coach Monday - Friday anytime from 10 AM - 4 PM if you want help with your resume, cover letter, LinkedIn, and more!
