#OwnIt

Meet Veronica Richmond, a senior double majoring in Biology and Creative Advertising! As a student passionate about both the sciences and the arts, Veronica has used her summer internships to explore how her interests intersect outside the classroom. She spent her freshman summer at the advertising agency Against, followed by her sophomore summer working as an ecology field technician for Boise State University.

Most recently, she blended both worlds through biological survey work and marketing for a science firm. This experience reinforced the idea that creativity and scientific inquiry can work hand in hand. On campus, Veronica brings this interdisciplinary mindset to her roles with the Office of Academic Enhancement and the School of Communication’s Curriculum Committee, where she supports student success and academic innovation.

Veronica credits Toppel’s resources, especially the industry-specific resume and CV samples, for helping her build confidence in her job search and better understand how to present herself across different fields.

Piece of Advice:

“Apply even if you don’t think you’re qualified – give the employer the chance to decide. Every no is still valuable; it keeps you accountable, helps you grow, and gives you more opportunities to advocate for yourself.”

Good Luck on Finals

Finals week can feel like a sprint and a marathon all at once, but you’ve got this. As you power through exams and projects, don’t forget that the focus and resilience you're building now are the same skills you'll use in your future career.

Time management, critical thinking, staying calm under pressure – you’re doing more than just studying, you’re sharpening your skills that will also help you for years to come.

So take a deep breath, take care of yourself, and give yourself credit for how far you’ve come. Need a quick study break? You're more than welcome to reserve a room at Toppel any time Monday - Friday, 9 AM - 5 PM. Good luck, and we’re cheering you on all the way!

Updating your Handshake Page Before the Break

Winter break is the perfect time to give your Handshake profile a refresh. With fewer academic demands, you’ve got a chance to focus on polishing it up without the pressure of a busy semester.

Whether you haven’t completed your profile yet or just need to update some documents, there may be a few things to ask yourself. Have you updated your resume lately? Picked up any new skills or completed a cool class project? Maybe you’ve taken a course that aligns with your career goals.

Adding those details now can help boost your visibility to employers who are actively searching. Plus, it’s one less thing to worry about once school picks back up. A strong, up-to-date profile puts you one step ahead and helps you make the most of opportunities that come your way.

Preparing for Life After Graduation

Graduating this fall? Before you walk across that stage, take a few minutes to fill out the confidential Graduating Student Survey. It’s a quick way to share your UM experience and help shape support for future Canes.

As you plan for your next steps after graduation, Toppel is here to help! Start by grabbing our 8-Step Job Search Toolkit and working through the workbook to help guide you along the way. If you need a new headshot, our self-service professional headshot photo booth is open and free to use, and you’re welcome to take one in your cap & gown as well. It’s a nice way to capture that shift from student to professional.

For a deeper dive into your job search, join us tomorrow on Zoom at 5 PM for our Job Search Boot Camp for Graduating Seniors. In this session, you’ll learn how to stand out on your resume, in interviews, and on LinkedIn!
