#OwnIt
Meet Spencer Montero, a freshman majoring in Sport Administration!
Spencer is already gaining hands-on experience across multiple areas of the sports industry. He currently works with Legends Global supporting Miami Hurricanes Athletics as a Student Service Specialist, assisting with ticketing operations and fan services. Over winter break, he interned with the Syracuse Crunch as a Partnership Activation Intern, where he supported corporate partnerships and game-day activations. He continues to expand his experience through event-based roles, including supporting Team Hospitality for the National Championship as a CFP Intern with 10 Fold Entertainment and REVERE.
Beyond professional roles, Spencer is actively involved in undergraduate research. He contributes to two projects—one examining the financial, social, and health impacts of sports gambling behaviors, and another analyzing the 2024 NFL season to study whether tight point spreads correlate with increased penalty frequency. Networking is a core part of his approach; he regularly schedules informational calls with industry professionals and is an active member of USPORT, with plans to apply for an executive board position in the fall. Spencer credits Toppel for helping him navigate internships and recruiting with clarity through resume support, career coaching, and personalized guidance.
Piece of Advice:
“Leverage LinkedIn and actively build connections in your field. People are more willing than you think to share advice and advocate for you, and those conversations can open doors you didn’t even know existed.”

Preparing for Career Fairs is Key
Career fairs can feel intimidating at first, especially if it’s your first time going to one. The good news is they’re often far less daunting than they seem and can be some of the most valuable experiences in your career journey. At their core, career fairs are simply opportunities to meet employers who are genuinely interested in getting to know students like you.
As you prepare for career fairs like our Job & Internship Expo, the key to success is preparation and mindset. Approach the event as a conversation, not an interrogation. Be yourself, show enthusiasm, and come ready to share your interests, experiences, and goals. Employers are there because they want to connect, so all you have to do is meet them halfway.
If you’re not sure where to start, you can meet with a career coach to practice introductions, review your résumé, and build confidence before the event. A little preparation goes a long way toward making the experience feel exciting instead of overwhelming.
