#OwnIt

Meet Emmet T. Moran, a junior majoring in accounting and legal studies with a minor in sports administration!

This summer, Emmet interned with the tax team at Schonfeld in New York City. He describes the experience as incredible, as the tax team was welcoming, and he learned a great deal throughout the summer. The campus recruitment team, led by Jennifer Kaplan, also organized memorable events where Emmet was able to form strong connections with the other interns.

Emmet says the Toppel Career Center has played a major role in helping him become career-ready. He regularly used the interviewing rooms for a quiet and controlled space to take interviews, and he found the staff extremely helpful and accessible when he had questions about internships and career prep.

Piece of Advice:

“Be proactive in networking. The university has such a strong alumni network across many industries, and they’re always open to conversations. I’ve learned so much by connecting with alumni.”

Network With Canes on C2C

You might not realize it, but networking could be the spark that turns an application into an actual opportunity. Networking isn’t about handing out business cards or sending LinkedIn requests; it’s about starting genuine conversations that can grow into lasting relationships.

One easy place to begin is Cane2Cane (C2C). It gives you direct access to thousands of UM alumni and supporters who understand where you’re coming from and are often excited to share advice, insights, or even open doors.

Remember, networking doesn’t have to feel scary – it’s simply curiosity, good questions, and follow-through. One conversation could lead to your next big step!

Dressing for Career Fairs

First impressions are everything, and with major career fairs like the Job & Internship Expo and Graduate School Fair quickly approaching, it’s important to come dressed in attire that reflects professionalism and confidence. Employers often notice how you present yourself before the conversation even begins, and polished attire can help set you apart.

Much like a job interview, what you wear will often depend on the industry you’re pursuing, so the best rule of thumb is to dress for the job you want. For instance, attending the Accounting Career Fair may call for a full suit and tie, while Engineering Career Day might allow for slightly more relaxed, but still polished, attire.

The key is to know your audience – do your research on the organizations you want to connect with and dress accordingly. For more tips, examples, and resources on professional dress, visit our website to make sure you feel confident and career-ready.

Thomas Sydnor Career Coach
Meet Thomas Sydnor, a junior computer science and mathematics major from McLean, Virginia! On campus, Thomas is involved in a variety of organizations, including the professional technology fraternity Kappa Theta Pi, Bonsai Research Labs, the Google Student Developer Club, Model UN, and Student Government.

This year, he’s looking forward to becoming even more involved on campus and enjoying the experience of living with his three closest friends. One thing he wishes he’d known earlier in his college journey is how many free resources the university offers, like access to LinkedIn Learning, which can be a game-changer for professional growth.

Thomas is ready to #OwnIt this year by carving out time to study for the LSAT and pursue professional certifications. These efforts have strengthened his resume, expanded his skills, and opened the door to exciting new networking opportunities with people who inspire him.

Piece of Advice:

“Failure isn't the end of the world, but the start of your new journey.”
