#OwnIt

Meet Elisa Villamizar Vogt, a senior double-majoring in finance and business analytics with a minor in French!

Last summer, Elisa interned at Interchecks Technologies in New York City as a Summer Analyst. Through this experience, she gained valuable hands-on experience in financial markets, strategic decision-making, and analysis. This internship solidified her passion for finance and inspired her to pursue more opportunities in the field.

Elisa says the Toppel Career Center played a key role in helping her become career-ready. Through the Angelo Family Endowment Fund, she secured funding for her internship. She also states that Toppel helped her refine her resume, prepare for interviews, and support her through the internship process. This made her feel empowered every step of the way!

Piece of Advice

"Take advantage of every resource available to you – whether it’s Toppel, a networking event, or a mentorship opportunity. Stay optimistic, even when the process gets stressful, and be ready to say yes to opportunities that come your way."

How to Find Events on Handshake

If you’re looking for career-related events happening on campus, Handshake is the place to go! Once you activate your Handshake account, you will have access to all of the upcoming events and career fairs that are available to you.

To do this, just log in to your Handshake account, click on “events” and there you’ll see all the upcoming events. If you’re looking for something specific, you can apply any relevant filters based on networking events, career fairs, virtual events, and more!

While we always provide the upcoming events of the week here in the Toppel Insider and on our Instagram, it’s best to take some time to browse through any upcoming events in the future that catch your eye and save them by using the little bookmark tab in the top right corner of the event so you can refer back to them later!

All About Resumes

Your resume can sometimes be the first impression you make on an employer, so it’s best to make sure it stands out in the hands of recruiters. When it comes to your resume, we have a wealth of resources, but it has two main functions:

  • To serve as a snapshot of your experience to give an employer an idea of how it aligns with a given role.
  • It should be easy to navigate to get the first point across quickly and effectively.
How you do that is totally up to you, but you can stop by Toppel and meet with one of our highly trained career coaches any time Monday – Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM or virtually on Zoom to get help with writing a resume, tweaking it, or anything else career-related that you’d like assistance with!

Andrea Nieves Mendez

Career Coach

Meet Andrea Nieves Mendez, a senior majoring in biomedical engineering from Ponce, Puerto Rico! On campus, she’s actively involved in several organizations, including the National Society of Black Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, Caribbean Students Association, and the Puerto Ricanes Club.

This year, Andrea is looking forward to putting her technical skills into action through her Senior Capstone project. Andrea says she wishes she had known earlier how much of a difference it makes to choose your professors wisely — the right instructor can make or break a semester.

As she prepares for graduation, Andrea is ready to #OwnIt by refining her resume and LinkedIn to confidently tackle job applications. Her dedication and preparation have already begun to pay off – she’s hopeful that by next semester, she’ll land her biggest opportunity yet: a full-time job offer!

Piece of Advice:

“Walk through life as if you already have what you desire, and your daily actions will start mirroring your goals.”
