#KeepinIt100
Meet Allyssa Beatty, a graduating senior majoring in broadcast journalism!
Early on, Allyssa interned at Fox 17 News in Nashville, where she worked hands-on with reporters, producers, and photographers.
The following summer, she took it to the next level by interning at NBC News in Los Angeles, where she worked alongside producers on breaking stories, logged tape, collected media assets, and assisted with fact-checking. These experiences gave her a front-row seat to the fast-paced world of network news and helped her make lasting professional connections.
Allyssa credits the Toppel Career Center for helping her reach these goals. Through the Toppel Internship Program and the Angelo Family Endowment Fund, she received both financial support and career guidance that made it possible to pursue her dream internships.
Piece of Advice:
“Take advantage of every opportunity even if it scares you. Don’t fear rejection, and don’t let it stop you from trying again. Toppel is one of your greatest resources – use it to explore, apply, and help fund the internships that will shape your future.”

Making your Handshake Page Public
If you’ve completed your Handshake profile already, there’s one more step you can take that can really boost your chances of being discovered by employers. By making your profile public, you open the door for recruiters, mentors, and even future colleagues to find you beyond just the Handshake platform.
Once it's public, you’ll get a personalized link you can share in emails, on LinkedIn, or even add to your resume. It’s super easy to set up – just click on your profile icon in the top right corner, then “settings,” and scroll down to “privacy,” where you can click the box that says, “I want my profile to be public and shareable outside of Handshake.”
Once you do this, you'll become more visible and can show off the skills you’ve gained. The benefit of this is that since Handshake is a student-based platform, certain experiences you include may stand out more (such as class projects, etc.) as opposed to places like LinkedIn, which focuses more on work experience.

Networking Through C2C
While some may not think it’s the most essential thing, did you know that networking could be the difference between getting an interview and getting ghosted by an employer? Networking isn’t just about collecting names or sending endless connection requests – it’s about creating meaningful relationships that can grow over time.
One good place to start is on Cane2Cane (C2C). With access to thousands of UM alumni and friends of the U, C2C is a built-in network of people who have been where you are and are often eager to offer insight, advice, or even opportunities.
The truth is networking doesn’t have to feel forced. At its core, it’s about showing curiosity, asking good questions, and staying open to connection. So, take that first step – reach out, follow up, and stay engaged. You never know where one conversation could lead!
