#KeepinIt100

Meet Michael Robinson Jr., a senior neuroscience major with minors in chemistry and LGBTQ+ studies!

This past summer, Michael was accepted into the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program at the University of Miami. Here he was paired with a research mentor and given a project to present at both a poster presentation and a conference.

During his time at UM, Michael also conducted research in the SHINE Lab, focusing on microaggressions experienced by Black women living with HIV. This research inspired his senior honors thesis, which examines HIV and LGBTQ populations among Black women.

Michael says that Toppel has helped him over the past three years at the U and was responsible for taking many of the headshots he used during interviews and application processes. He also attended Toppel’s workshops through MSA’s Beyond the Horizons Program, where he learned more about networking and building a professional resume. Lastly, he learned how to obtain professional clothing through the Toppel Insider and used platforms like Handshake to find internships he applied for.

Piece of Advice:

“Never live in regret - I was once told that regret is a wasted emotion, and that stuck with me. It’s easy to dwell on what might have been, but it’s far more important to focus on what could be. Now, I live by that mantra. Life is full of opportunities, and sometimes the biggest risks bring the greatest rewards. Always take chances, even if you doubt yourself. Growth happens outside your comfort zone, and by taking that leap, you open yourself to possibilities you never imagined.”

Break Through With the BreakThru Diversity Mixer

When it comes to choosing a career, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) can play an important role in how one feels within the workplace. To ensure that we are connecting diverse students to employers who value DEIB, we’ll be hosting our BreakThru Diversity Mixer on September 17 at 4 PM in the Lakeside Village Auditorium & Expo Center.

This event is designed for underrepresented student populations, including Black, Indigenous, & People of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQ+, first generation, and students with disabilities, to connect with employers who value and promote DEIB.

It serves as a lead into our signature Job & Internship Expo/Graduate School Fair and supports future professionals by providing them an early opportunity to connect with employers before attending Expo.

Natalie Gutierrez

Career Coach

Meet Natalie Gutierrez, a senior computer science major with minors in mathematics and business technology! Natalie is part of the Google Developer Club and First Gen Canes Club.

Something she wishes she had known in her previous years at the U is that there is always a support system around you, and if you need help, you should not hesitate to seek it. Making sure you take advantage of the U’s great resources will help you succeed and make you feel like you are not alone.

One way that Natalie is #KeepinIt100 to achieve her career goals is by setting realistic goals. She now avoids comparing her journey to others and instead focuses on what success looks like for her.

She was able to obtain an internship at the end of May, and although many may say that if you do not obtain an internship early, you are out of luck…by not comparing herself to others, staying optimistic, and putting in hard work, she was able to still obtain a great internship that has helped her accelerate her career journey!

Piece of Advice:

“Do not compare yourself and your journey to others. We all have our timelines and our strengths, and if you compare yourself to others, you will just be hurting yourself.”
