The Power of Setting Goals
In order to get to where you want to go, you must first know where you’re going and how you plan on getting there. One of the first steps towards achieving your goals is to figure out exactly what you want. If you have a general idea, that's great! But by knowing what you specifically want, you'll have an easier time navigating ways to get there. A good thing to do is to ask yourself the following questions: What do you love doing? What does the world need? What can you get paid for? And what are you good at?
Once you’ve done that, the next part is coming up with action steps for getting there. When it comes to setting goals, it’s good to focus on SMART goals – goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Based. By following this metric, you can carve out a clear path to achieve your goals.
After setting your goals, you can then focus on the specific action steps needed to achieve them and set deadlines for yourself so you can stay on track. Feel free to use our 8-Step Job Search Toolkit to help you plan. The deadlines you set are for you only, so if you mess up – have space to give yourself some grace so that you can move forward with positive energy surrounding the whole process!

Update Your Handshake Profile
With a lot of downtime on your hands over the summer, now might be a great time to start updating your Handshake profile. If you’ve completed your profile, you can go through it and see if there’s anything new you might want to add. Things like your updated resume, new skills you’ve acquired, school projects, or courses you’ve taken are some things to consider adding.
By doing so, you’re more likely to stand out to employers as they search for candidates. You’ll also have your profile updated and ready to go once the semester starts, and you won’t have to worry about updating it as you get back into the swing of things in the fall!
