#UShine

Meet Taylor Shirk, a first-gen sophomore majoring in Computer Science, Political Science, and Mathematics, with a minor in Dance.

Last semester Taylor joined Kappa Theta Pi, UM’s professional technology fraternity, where she has participated in professional & technical workshops, networking events, as well as the rush and marketing committees.

Taylor is also the treasurer and an instructor for Salsa Craze, where she has been honing her communication, teaching, and organizational skills. As a Schonfeld Scholar, she visited the Schonfeld office in Wynwood. There, she spoke with the software engineers and previous interns who had gotten hired to learn more about their experiences and how they transitioned from college to internships and full-time jobs at Schonfeld.

Taylor says that Toppel’s career coaches have helped her update and perfect her resume, as well as helped improve her interview skills. She will also be attending the Career Crawl: Arts & Sciences in NYC over spring break!

Piece of Advice:

“Fake it till you make it! Nobody knows how to do anything (including life) perfectly on the first try, so do your best and stay confident. If you consistently put in the effort and advocate for yourself, opportunities will come your way.”

Preparing for a Career Fair

Whether it’s your first career fair, or the mere idea of convincing a stranger to hire you riddles you with anxiety...let’s face it, career fairs can seem intimidating at first. But what if we told you it’s not as scary as you think?

When it comes to career fairs, it’s best to view it as taking the time to meet people who are looking forward to meeting you. Because at the end of the day, that’s what the employers are there for – they want to meet and get to know you. All that’s left is for you to reciprocate their energy, be your authentic yourself, and prepare before you get there.

How you prepare is all up to you! But if you want some ideas, check out this article on Handshake that gives some really good tips on how to make the most out of a career fair.

Register for the BreakThru Diversity Mixer on Handshake

To help you break through barriers and get a headstart in the job search, we’re hosting our BreakThru Diversity Mixer at 4 PM today in the Lakeside Village Expo Center!

BreakThru is a career event designed for underrepresented student populations, including Black, Indigenous & People of Color (BIPOC), First-Generation, LGBTQ+, and students with disabilities at the University of Miami, to connect with employers who value and promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

This serves as a lead into our Job & Internship Expo tomorrow, which means you can network with specific employers before attending our largest career fair event and make a lasting impression.

The Job & Internship Expo is Tomorrow

Expo is finally here! Tomorrow, we invite you to attend UM’s biggest recruiting event – the Job & Internship Expo! At 1 PM in the Watsco Center, you’ll have the chance to meet with over 100 employers who are looking to hire UM students for their open positions.

Expo attracts companies from various industries, including healthcare, communication, government, non-profit, science, technology, and more. All you have to do is register on Handshake, bring copies of your resume, and be sure to dress to impress!

Need new clothes? Browse some of our resources to find your right fit. Need help preparing? Feel free to meet with one of our career coaches to have your resume critiqued or to have them answer any questions you have regarding attending Expo.
