#UShine

Meet Lexx Lang, a freshman Neuroscience major on the pre-med track from Toronto, Canada. He is also double minoring in Microbiology & Immunology and French!

During his first semester at UM, Lexx searched for physicians in Miami on LinkedIn to see if they would be interested in having him shadow and observe them in their offices/clinics. Through this, he got in contact with some neuro-oncologists at Baptist Health Kendall's Miami Cancer Institute and has been shadowing them in their clinic at the MCI for a few months now.

Additionally, Lexx works as a research guide assistant in the UQUEST Lab at the University of Miami, which is a project in the Behavioral Medicine department that works alongside the Overtown Youth Center in Miami. As a volunteer, he teaches science lessons to young students who are interested in the field. Lexx is also a volunteer research assistant at The Miller School of Medicine in an OB/GYN Oncology lab led by UM Medical School faculty Dr. Sophia George, where he assists in the lab by processing different swab samples and different patient samples to prepare for their research.

Lexx said that Toppel has helped him out in a multitude of ways such as introducing him to Handshake, providing access to professional headshots with their headshot photobooth, and helping him review his resume. He says that another valuable resource that Toppel has provided is their Job Search for International Students Information Session which was held alongside ISSS regarding finding jobs as an international student on an F1 Visa etc.

Piece of Advice:

Never think it is too soon to get started in something. I suggest that anyone nervous about branching out beyond their class schedule, just do it and put your name out into the world. As the list of opportunities is only growing there are going to be somethings that if you hold off on doing, you will later regret not doing.

Laila Pettus

Career Education Intern

Meet Laila Pettus, a sophomore Broadcast Journalism and Advertising major from Washington, D.C.!

Laila is a part of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and UMTV. One way that Laila #UShined was by constantly going above and beyond for all tasks assigned to her during her Summer 2022 internship with the FDIC. She took on every assignment with a positive and enthusiastic attitude and as a result, was invited back to intern with them this past summer!

Laila said that she is most looking forward to becoming more involved in social organizations and making more meaningful connections with other students, staff, and professors this semester; as well as her Introduction to Advertising class and Social Media Messaging and Strategies class! Since being at UM she learned that it’s okay to speak up in class – ask questions, answer questions, ask your professor to slow down, or tell them you need clarity.

Piece of Advice:

“Always do everything out of love because eventually, love is all we have for people to remember us by.”
