Meet Aiden Orleans-Pobee, a sophomore microbiology and immunology major on the pre-med track!
Aiden job shadowed at George Washington University Hospital and Warren Clinic last summer. During this experience, he learned more about internal medicine, biomedical engineering, oncology, hematology, and pediatrics. Aiden is currently an undergraduate researcher in Dr. Tomei’s Islet Lab, where he participates in research to find a cure for type I diabetes. Aiden is also a fundraising chair for the African Student Union (ASU), an IMPACT Leadership Experience facilitator, and a Beyond the Horizons mentor. Through these experiences, he has seen growth in his ability to communicate, network, organize events, and achieve his goals!
Aiden says that the career coaches at Toppel are extremely helpful whenever he is looking for career-related advice and resume assistance. He also says that through Toppel's professional headshot photo booth, he was able to take great professional headshots to use for any career-related matter. By utilizing Toppel’s resources, Aiden has seen substantial growth in his professional development and plans to continue using them!
Piece of Advice:
"Utilize all the resources UM offers! Across campus, there are a multitude of opportunities to grow yourself, both professionally and personally. I recommend exploring and staying up-to-date with organizations, programs, and clubs in your field of interest. In addition, don't be afraid to try something new, as you may love it and gain a lot from it. It can seem like a lot at first, but the skills you’ll develop from getting involved will be beneficial for you in both your undergrad and postgraduate life."

Build Your Skills With In-Demand Certifications
Although certifications aren't required for every industry, getting certified in your area of interest may help you stand out from the crowd. If you’re in a field like IT, then you may already know about some of the certifications offered in your area. But if you’re not in tech, did you know that there are several other in-demand certifications available as well?
A certificate isn’t just a document that shows you've completed a course; it can even serve as leverage when it comes to getting a job or a higher salary! Getting certified also shows that you’re dedicated to your professional development and proves you have the essential skills within that field.

Including Your Skills On Your Handshake Profile
When it comes to building a strong Handshake profile to attract employers, one thing to consider adding is your skills. While including skills like Adobe, Word, and Excel is a must, it’s also beneficial to include core competencies as well. These are things like communication, critical thinking, and time management.
Believe it or not, these do stand out to recruiters as they look for you because they highlight essential skills that are vital to most roles. For example, time management is a skill that is necessary when it comes to meeting deadlines – something that all jobs have.
Because these skills are often transferrable, they’re relatively easy to highlight during an interview. To add skills to your Handshake page, go to your profile, look in the left-hand column, and scroll down till you see “skills.” From there, you can add all of the skills that apply to you.

How To Get Into Job Shadowing
Sometimes, a company may not have an opening for the internship you’re looking for, but did you know it doesn’t have to end there? Job shadowing provides you with a chance to gain insight into a career by observing a professional in their work environment.
The benefits of job shadowing are symbiotic – one, the company has little to lose from allowing someone to learn more about what they do, and secondly…it provides you with hands-on experience that is invaluable to you and your career development.
Aside from acquiring valuable skills that you can add to your resume, it can also serve as an amazing networking opportunity. You’ll get the chance to work alongside other individuals there and learn from them as well! Feel free to check out our website to learn more about job shadowing.

Liam Cupit
Guest Experience Assistant
|
Meet Liam Cupit, a sophomore majoring in finance and accounting!
Liam is a part of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and Target Canes. As he begins to narrow down what he wants to do in the future, Liam is excited to start his internship this summer.
Seeing all his friends so focused on getting jobs and internships led him to study hard for his interviews, and he eventually received an offer from a firm!
Something Liam wishes he had known before attending UM was how useful it is to receive tutoring from the Camner Center for classes you may be struggling with.
Piece of Advice:
“UM has a lot of free resources to offer, and it is extremely helpful to take advantage of them.”
