#UShine

Meet Isabella Destounis, a senior Broadcast Journalism major with a double minor in Public Relations and Political Science!

This past summer she was a Public Relations intern for a Miami-based PR agency called GreenRoom Agency. Through this internship, she was able to see the agency side of PR and gained real-world experience as she was able to collaborate with her co-workers and see first-hand how they interacted with their clients.

She was also an Orientation Fellow for the recent fall 'Cane Kickoff and a TA for a section of the First Year Directions course this semester. Some resources she has used for gaining professional experience are LinkedIn and Handshake.

Isabella says the Toppel Career Center has helped her become career-ready by providing her with various career-centric resources. Specifically, Handshake which is where she found the posting for her recent internship and was able to connect with the employees at GreenRoom, ultimately leading to interviews for the job.

Piece of Advice:

“Take advantage of the opportunities Toppel and UM have to offer. Even if you do not find a job or internship right away, keep looking and networking until you find something. The staff at Toppel is also there to help if you need any extra guidance!”

How to Stand Out at Virtual Career Fairs

Although it may seem a bit intimidating at first, virtual career fairs aren’t too different from in-person career fairs. Why? Because you’re all there for the same reason – to connect with employers and see if the opportunities available are the right ones for you.

So when it comes to virtual career fairs, your approach should be no different. Always come prepared with some talking points, be professionally dressed, and have an updated version of your resume.

If it’s your first virtual career fair, or even if you’re still getting your feet wet when it comes to career fairs, feel free to take a look at this article that provides valuable information on how to stand out at a virtual career fair.

Lex Jack

Guest Experience Intern

Meet Lex Jack, a sophomore psychology major with minors in mathematics and philosophy!

She is currently a research assistant for the PAIR Program at UM’s Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. For this academic year, Lex says that she’s most looking forward to gaining research experience in the psychology field. During her first year at the U, she wished she had known that fully transitioning into college is a long process and that it’s okay if you’re not completely comfortable during your first few weeks.

The way Lex #UShined to achieve her career goals is by consistently advocating for herself and her future. She did this by taking the initiative in the first steps to attaining her goals. By advocating for herself, Lex gained the opportunity to work in a hands-on clinical research lab here at the U!
