#LevelUp

Meet Ranya Marrakchi, a second-year Master of Public Health student!

She is a Research Assistant for a non-profit she volunteers with called a Breeze of Hope, as well as a Graduate Research Assistant for Dr. Vidot's International Cannabis and Psychedelics Research Laboratory. This summer she will be working with the NIH-Funded Minority Health and Health Disparities (MHRT) program in Jamaica in collaboration with the University of West Indies. During this opportunity, she will get firsthand experience with study start-up and implementation and will assist with the launch of their HIV and Cannabis research program.

She says that Toppel has immensely prepared her with their workshops, Expos, and recruiting/job opportunities. Getting the emails from Toppel and Handshake allows her to always stay in the loop and be updated with what is going on to keep her career ready and work on becoming better professionally.

Piece of Advice:

“We are sometimes our own worst enemy. Do not let fear hold you back from going after whatever it is you want to go after. Take that risk and go for that opportunity because it could end up being really beneficial to you later on. You will learn so much from it and not have that ‘what if’ gut feeling. There’s rarely any growth in comfort, so step outside that bubble and push yourself to do better and be better!”

Laila Pettus

CE Intern

Meet Laila Pettus, a freshman broadcast journalism and Spanish major from Washington, D.C!

She is the freshman liaison for UM’s ‘Hairology’ club and is also a part of the Residential Leadership Council (RLC).

To #LevelUp and achieve her career goals, she said she had to step outside of her comfort zone and branch out into areas that she thought didn’t interest her. Stepping outside of her comfort zone led her to obtain an internship with a government agency.

The internship was finance-based and as a broadcast journalism major, she said she never pictured herself doing that. However, she said she absolutely loved the internship and all the opportunities that it presented as she gained lifelong professional connections. Her role was still communication-related, so she was able to truly understand how different areas of concentration work together to create one cohesive corporation.

She also says that joining Toppel helped enable her to #LevelUp by exposing her to different events and resources that UM and the community offer to help her excel personally and professionally.

Piece of Advice:

“We should always do everything out of love because eventually love is all we have for people to remember us by.”
