Meet Brittney K. Mensah, a Political Science, International Studies, and Sociology major! She is a pre-law student, a Hammond Scholar, the President of the African Students Union, the founder & chair of the Multicultural Student Council, the Co-Program Coordinator for Beyond the Horizons, and a President’s 100 Ambassador.

During the summer of her junior year, she became a Teaching Fellow with Americorps - Breakthrough Miami. Through this program, she learned how the education system disproportionately affects students of color. Furthermore, she was educated on the laws surrounding the education system and was inspired by Breakthrough Miami about the change that can be implemented through the law field in education. As a result, she took it upon herself to apply to law school, which she will be attending in the fall of 2023, with a primary focus on education law reform.

She says that Toppel has helped her to obtain jobs and internships that would properly assist her with her future career. She used Handshake to apply for the internships she had throughout her time at the U. Additionally, she utilized the resume workshops to improve the layout and format of her resume. Finally, she attended some of the pre-law / law programs that came to UM to assist with the law school process.

Piece of Advice: “Do not be afraid to ask for help. When I started my law school application journey, I felt very alone and unsure. Once I asked for help, I realized that so many people were willing to assist me or connect me with the resources I needed to prevail. You have a village here at the University of Miami; use it.”

The Toppel Internship Fund is here to support you by reducing financial challenges as you pursue high-quality internships that foster career exploration. We offer awards of $500 to $3,000 to undergraduate students who will be accepting unpaid or paid internship opportunities this summer.

So if you have secured an internship for the summer of 2023 and need additional funding for items, such as transportation, housing, business apparel, or supplies necessary for the internship, please review the application process, and submit your application today!

Meet Jonathan Zhou, a junior Finance Major with a Mathematics and Quantitative Economics Minor from Rockville, MD!

He is a part of the Cane’s Finance Association, the TAMID Group, the student-managed investment fund (SMIF), as well as Alpha Kappa Psi professional business fraternity.

In order to #LevelUp he said he had to stop being lazy/procrastinating and actually put in the work necessary to achieve his career goals. Through doing this, he was able to lock in an internship this upcoming summer for a career path he is interested in!
