Meet Nicholas Hand, a junior Economics and Business Technology major!
Nicholas works at the IT Help Desk in the Miami Herbert Business School providing technician support to their students, faculty, and staff. Last winter break, Nicholas interned remotely with a Miami accounting firm, RSM US, where he served as an at-risk consulting intern. Through this internship, he was able to complete industry-relevant certifications on cybersecurity and threat intelligence, including a Google Cybersecurity Certificate, and acquired technical skills to support secure cloud environments.
Nicholas says that Toppel’s resources assist him greatly in his career search with their resume and cover letter templates, interview prep resources, and practice interviews. He cites Handshake as being a major tool when it comes to finding local Miami and UM opportunities like career fairs and local hiring events.
Piece of Advice:
“Always overdress for any formal occasion, especially career fairs. The number of times I’ve made a positive impression on a recruiter due to my appearance has been numerous. In addition, being prepared for career fairs and interviews makes the experience a lot more fun and a lot less scary. Having normal conversations with the recruiters rather than being robotic and stating your resume to them will make a big difference for who gets interview offers.”

Updating Your Notification Preferences on Handshake
Mobile notifications can either be very annoying or extremely important. But did you know that you can manage the Handshake notifications that you receive? If you’ve downloaded the Handshake app, you may not automatically receive relevant notifications, but there are two easy ways to ensure that you get important notifications sent directly to you.
Once you log into Handshake on your computer, all you have to do is click on the “My Profile” icon in the top right corner, and then click on “Notification Preferences”. From there it will bring you to a list of notifications that you’re currently receiving (or not receiving). Be sure to go through that list and update the notifications that you’d like to receive. This method allows you to manage all notifications in one place, including both mobile and email notifications.
To manage your mobile notifications, open the Handshake app, click on the bell icon in the top right corner, and then click on the gear icon in the top right corner on the next page. From there, you can toggle specific notifications that you’d like to receive on your phone. What’s great about these is that you can curate the experience that’s best for you to stay updated on ways that you can help advance your career.
