#OwnIt

Meet Valery Desme, a sophomore majoring in Economics & Public Health!

Building real-world experience in economics started with one simple step: logging into Handshake. That decision led her to an internship with the City of Miami Beach Economic Development Department, where she gained hands-on experience shaping initiatives that directly support the local community.

Through the internship, she spent a semester contributing to impactful projects, like developing a business retention plan to help small businesses stay open and creating Spring Break operational protocols for key areas across Miami Beach. Beyond internship experience, she also stays active on campus as a member of the Pre-Optometry Association at UM, where they connect with Optometrists and explore pathways toward their goal of earning an O.D. degree.

Piece of Advice:

“UM offers many resources that are often overlooked, but by fully exploring the benefits available to you as a student, you can make the most of your time here and build not only your career, but your overall experience as well.”

If you’re a first-year or a senior, keep a close eye on your inbox. You might have just received the golden ticket: an email inviting you to take the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and a chance to win $5 in dining dollars. Yes, actual dining dollars. No, it’s not an April fool’s joke.

The survey takes about 15 minutes and plays an important role in shaping the student experience at the University of Miami. Feedback from NSSE helps strengthen areas such as advising, tutoring, campus programs, academic resources, and overall student engagement

So when the NSSE email arrives, take a moment to share your perspective. Your voice directly contributes to creating a more supportive, engaging campus for current and future Canes.
