#OwnIt
Meet Phuong Hong Ngoc Tao, a junior majoring in Immunology & Microbiology!
Starting freshman year, she engaged with the Toppel Career Center, attending events, utilizing resources, and seeking guidance early. Her preparation paid off when attending a CITI event helped her strengthen her interview skills and secure an internship at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
During her time there, she conducted hands-on cancer research and gained firsthand exposure to the realities of a career in science. The experience helped her understand the type of lab environment, mentorship style, and research culture where she thrives. Most importantly, it solidified her commitment to pursuing a PhD, giving her clarity and confidence in her next steps.
Piece of Advice:
“It’s very important to take a break when you need it. Have a lot of fun along the way. This is the time of your life to try out new things because you have so much freedom.”

Professional Standards
As career fair season is wrapping up, now is when professionalism matters even more. Employers often continue evaluating candidates long after the fair doors close. How you conduct yourself from here on out will make or break the opportunities at hand.
If you attended a fair or met employers recently, take time to follow up, thank them for their time, and continue putting your best foot forward during interviews. Demonstrating professionalism shows that you are dependable and committed to your career goals.
When you meet with employers, always be sure to show up on time to interviews or cancel at least 48 hours in advance, withdraw completely from the job search process once you’ve accepted an offer, and never falsify any information. If you’d like to learn more, check out our
Professional Standards and Student Responsibilities page on our website.

Liam Cupit
Guest Experience Assistant
|
Meet Liam, a senior majoring in finance!
He finished his Tax Internship with PwC here in Miami where he gained hands-on experience in key areas such as tax research, return filings, and client relations, skills that many students only read about in textbooks. Through that he was able to connect with talented professionals and discover meaningful work that aligned with his interests. His dedication paid off, earning him a return offer to join PwC full-time in the summer.
He credits Toppel for both its valuable resources and the exposure it gave him to a professional office environment. From learning workplace expectations to building confidence, Toppel played an important role in helping him strengthen his skills and prepare for life after graduation.
Piece of Advice:
“In terms of preparing for a career post-grad, start earlier rather than later. Even going to Toppel as a freshman and talking to a coach about creating a resume, Linkedin, etc. puts you ahead of other people.”
