Meet Skyler, a junior majoring in marine biology and ecology!

This past year, she focused on gaining hands-on experience in veterinary medicine, research, and animal care. Skyler completed a full-time internship as a Veterinary Assistant at NewDay Veterinary Care, where she performed clinical tasks in a fast-paced environment and developed skills in animal handling, diagnostics, surgery support, and communication with clients.

This experience showed her how much she enjoys clinical work and confirmed her commitment to veterinary medicine. She credits Toppel with helping her secure internship funding that made it possible for her to participate in an unpaid internship. By having that financial support, Skyler says she was able to focus on gaining skills and experience important for her career development without the stress of balancing outside work.

“Take initiative early and get involved in experiences that align with your interests, even if they’re unpaid or outside your comfort zone. Use campus programs and funding opportunities, ask professionals questions and stay open to learning from every role and mentor. Each step builds confidence and helps you discover what you’re passionate about.”
