Meet Luca Ermilio, a junior majoring in computer science!
His professional journey is a powerful reminder that persistence creates opportunity. After struggling to secure an internship early in his sophomore year, Luca refused to let limited experience or age define his path. Instead, he pivoted by targeting smaller companies and unpaid opportunities where he could grow. Support from the Angelo Family Endowment made this journey possible, allowing Luca to pursue growth without compromise and perform at his best. That determination led him to a role as a mobile application engineer at Bettor Vision, a sports betting startup, where he gained hands-on experience and confidence.
Motivated to continue building, Luca launched a personal mobile app that tracks macros and integrates fitness watches to calculate net calories. Together, his internship and personal project strengthened his technical skills and gave his resume real substance. When interview season returned, Luca was ready and it showed. He earned offers from both PwC and Comcast, ultimately accepting a Mobile Engineering Intern role at Comcast for Summer 2026.
Piece of Advice:
“Some of the most important factors behind my success were being prepared (overly prepared, at times), networking and leveraging connections, and, most importantly, not accepting "no" as the final answer. Instead of giving up, I spent the next year learning from my mistakes, gaining experience, strengthening my skills, and building on the connections I made throughout the process. That’s what ultimately led to my success.”

Beware Fraudulent Postings
Professionalism isn’t just about how you communicate or show up, but it’s also about protecting yourself and your information. While the Toppel Career Center makes every effort to screen employers and job postings on Handshake, fake listings can still appear. Some individuals post “jobs” with the intent of collecting personal information or money.
When searching or applying for positions, always take a moment to pause and evaluate the opportunity. If something feels off, trust your instincts. Here are a few signs of a potentially fraudulent employer:
• The contact email doesn’t match the company’s website domain.
• The position requires an upfront payment or asks for bank details.
• The posting contains noticeable spelling or grammatical errors.
• You’re offered large payments for transferring or depositing funds.
If you spot any suspicious postings, please report it to us at 305-284-5451 or HireACane@miami.edu. Protecting your reputation and information is part of being a professional. Stay alert, and when in doubt, reach out – we’re here to help.
