#OwnIt

Meet Laura Merlin, a senior Business Technology major with a minor in Computer Science!

This past summer, Laura interned at Krispy Kreme’s headquarters in Charlotte, NC, where she served as a Business Analyst. The experience gave her a behind-the-scenes look into the food industry and operations, and she quickly fell in love with the brand and its culture. Before that, Laura worked as a Student Assistant in the University’s Research Intelligence & Capacity department, where she’s thrilled to continue contributing this semester.

Laura says that Toppel has helped her expand her professional network, especially as an international student. She values the career fairs and employer events that have connected her with companies and helped her build visibility and confidence in the U.S. job market.

Piece of Advice:

“Use the connections you have, be appreciative of the people you meet, and put yourself out there. Go to career fairs, ask for help and advice, and most importantly – trust that things will work out!”

Stay Ahead of Internship Deadlines on Handshake

When searching for internships on Handshake, staying on top of application deadlines can make all the difference. Many employers review applications on a rolling basis, but some industries have specific deadlines…so the earlier you apply, the better.

Finding out which employers are still looking comes down to how you search. To get started, click the filter on the left that says “most relevant” and select “soonest application deadlines.” This will show you opportunities closing soon that may still be looking for positions to fill in the near future. You can also choose “newest jobs” to find recently posted positions that may be hiring right now.

From there, you can use the filters to filter by industry, pay, location, etc., to help narrow down your search. Keep in mind that internship timelines can vary by industry, and all have different peak recruiting seasons. To make sure you know when to apply, check out this article for a breakdown of internship deadlines and requirements across top industries.
