#OwnIt
Meet Brenis J. Bostick, a senior majoring in English with a concentration in Creative Writing and minoring in Human and Social Development!
Brenis has taken steps to grow as a leader, mentor, and advocate throughout his time at the U. As President of First Gen Canes, he spearheaded initiatives supporting first-generation college students through community building, professional development, and mentorship. One accomplishment was expanding the Professional Closet Initiative, securing $3,000 in Goodwill vouchers to help students access professional attire and career resources.
His commitment to opportunity deepened through attending the BreakThru Mixer hosted by Toppel. At BreakThru, Brenis connected with employers who share the same values as him and represented First Gen Canes while learning how to prepare his peers for similar spaces.
Outside of the U, Brenis also leads poetry workshops, facilitates conversations about the healing of storytelling, and speaks with incarcerated youth. These experiences have shaped his post-graduation goal of teaching within juvenile correctional settings by using writing, education, and reflection to help young people rediscover purpose.
Piece of Advice:
“Every step you take leaves a mark; not just for you, but for those who follow. Build your legacy through consistency, service, and the courage to keep showing up. Surround yourself with community, use the resources available to you, and let your growth be someone else’s encouragement. We rise higher when we lift as we climb.”

The Value of Networking
Networking in college can shape your career in ways you might not expect. The relationships you build now can lead to job referrals, mentorship, real-world insight, and opportunities you may not have discovered on your own.
A great place to begin networking is Cane2Cane (C2C). With thousands of UM alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the U, C2C gives you direct access to people who’ve been in your shoes and are often eager to offer guidance, answer questions, or help you take the next step in your journey.
The thing about networking is that it doesn’t have to feel forced or overwhelming. At its core, it’s simply about being curious, asking thoughtful questions, and staying open to meeting people who can expand your perspective. To learn even more about how to make the most of networking in college, check out this article from Indeed.

Lily Cran
Guest Experience Assistant
|
Meet Lily Cran, a junior Biology major with minors in Spanish and Psychology!
On campus, Lily is an active member of UM Women’s Club Soccer, Best Buddies, and the UM Pre-Dental Club. This year, she’s especially excited to study abroad in Seville, Spain, a lifelong dream that will allow her to immerse herself in a new culture and strengthen her Spanish skills.
Lily is committed to #OwnIt by challenging herself to take risks and embrace the unknown. As she prepares to study abroad and apply to dental school, she’s focused on facing challenges with confidence and curiosity. Her journey at UM has taught her to seek out the many resources available on campus and to embrace change as an opportunity for growth rather than resistance.
Piece of Advice:
"Push yourself to be uncomfortable. The only way to own every space you enter is by first allowing yourself to be uncomfortable in it."
