#OwnIt

Meet Sophia Shawwa, a senior majoring in Sports Administration!

Sophia recently began a new role at Enfinity Global as an HR Operations Specialist. This experience has given her valuable insight into the fast-paced world of HR and inspired her to pursue a long-term career in the field. Sophia loves contributing to the employee experience while building practical skills that will support her growth as a professional.

Toppel has been instrumental in helping Sophia feel prepared and confident in her career journey. Through resume reviews, career coaching, and workshops, she learned how to communicate her experience effectively and understand what employers are looking for. Sophia also credits Handshake and career fairs for connecting her with real-world opportunities and expanding her awareness of the job market.

Piece of Advice:

“Be patient and trust the process. Finding the right opportunity takes time, but persistence pays off. Keep applying, improving your resume, and putting yourself out there. Network with everyone you can, because one conversation can open unexpected doors. And most importantly, don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, that’s where the real growth happens.”

Highlighting the Skills you DO Have

Have you ever come across a job posting and doubted yourself because you have some of what they want, but not all? Before you screen yourself out, remember that you don’t necessarily need to meet every qualification to apply.

Every application is a chance to practice, learn, and get closer to that “yes,” so applying anyway can open doors you didn’t realize were already within reach.

Confidence isn’t about knowing everything – it’s about believing you can learn, adapt, and bring value. The truth is, confidence often comes from taking action, not waiting until you feel “ready.”

Career Connections: Own Your Future Alumni Mixer

We invite you to join the Toppel Career Center and Alumni Engagement for a dynamic and inspiring networking event, generously sponsored by Brenda Yester Baty, B.B.A. ’90, President’s Council Member.

This Thursday, November 6, from 4 to 6 PM, you will have the chance to engage in conversations with alumni leaders who have excelled in their industries. They can share their experiences, offer meaningful insights, and provide practical advice to help guide you as you explore different career paths and prepare for life after graduation.

This event is designed to spark authentic connections, foster mentorship, and build confidence as you develop your goals. Register on Handshake and get ready to learn, connect, and grow through networking.

Using CareerSpring as a First-Gen Student

November 8 is National First-Generation College Celebration Day, and it is the perfect time to recognize the unique strengths and challenges that being a first-gen student can bring to your career journey.

Building confidence takes time, but small daily practices can help. Try setting affirmations, journaling about your accomplishments, and celebrating personal wins. Seeking guidance from mentors or peers and speaking with a counselor can also provide valuable support and perspective.

One resource to utilize is CareerSpring, which is a platform specifically designed for first-gen students. CareerSpring's network and guidance can help bridge the gap between your education and meaningful employment, offering mentorship and real-world insights from people who were once in your shoes. Sign up today and use the code CANES.
