#OwnIt
Meet Simone Thom, a senior Health Science major!
Recently, Simone published neuroscience research with the Simons Foundation and the Dallman Lab, where she investigated the role of the Syngap1 gene in enteric nervous system development and its connection to Autism Spectrum Disorder using zebrafish models.
Simone also works at the Launch Pad, guiding students, alumni, and faculty on business ventures as a project lead. On campus, she serves as president of the Mu Nu Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., an experience that has strengthened her leadership, organization, and communication skills.
Simone credits Toppel with boosting her confidence as she prepares for life after graduation. Through career fairs, networking, mentorship, and tools like Job Scan and Toppel’s resources, she gained the support to pursue a career that blends science, strategy, and entrepreneurship.
Piece of Advice:
“Be proactive in seeking experiences and mentorship, and don’t be afraid to pivot. Some of the best opportunities come from exploring where your passions and skills intersect.”

Professional Standards & Responsibilities
As you meet with employers after career fairs and beyond, professionalism sets the tone for how you’re perceived.
That’s why at Toppel, we have our Professional Standards & Student Responsibilities. These guidelines help ensure you’re representing yourself (and the university) with integrity. For instance:
- If you commit to an interview or appointment, honor it or cancel at least 48 hours beforehand.
- Do not falsify any details, as it can harm your reputation.
- Once you accept a job offer, step away from other applications and interviews.
At the end of the day, professionalism is about courtesy and trust, which are qualities that will carry you far. You can explore the full list of our standards on our website!

Following Up With Recruiters You Met At Career Fairs On Handshake
If you made some great connections at one of our career fairs, now it’s time to keep that momentum going. Following up with the recruiters you met is one of the most important steps after a career fair. It shows professionalism, reinforces your interest, and helps you stand out from the many students they may have spoken with.
If you received a business card, send a quick thank-you while the conversation is still fresh. If you didn’t, you still have options. Just head to the respective career fair you attended and on Handshake, click “see all employers,” and navigate to the company’s profile. Many employers list their recruiters under a “public staff list,” which allows you to message them directly.
If that doesn’t work, LinkedIn or the company’s website is your next best resource. When searching for a recruiter, there is a reliable way to connect and follow up. Taking these extra steps helps keep the door open for future opportunities.

Zhamila Karim
Career Coach
|
Meet Zhamila Karim, a junior from Almaty, Kazakhstan, majoring in Accounting with minors in Finance and Psychology!
On campus, Zhamila is active in the Asian American Student Association (AASA) and Psi Chi. This year, she’s excited to follow through on new initiatives she has committed to and continue exploring her career path with focus and curiosity.
Zhamila is committed to #OwnIt by embracing her career journey at her own pace, prioritizing growth over self-doubt, and leaning into opportunities that help her move forward. This mindset has helped her overcome challenges, including an identity crisis early in college, and taught her the importance of trusting her own path and building confidence along the way.
Piece of Advice:
"Don’t be afraid to step into something new. What unsettles the mind isn’t risk, but the unfamiliar."
