#KeepinIt100
Meet Heather West, a senior marine affairs major!
This past summer Heather did an internship at VIP Diving in the Caribbean. During this time, she became a Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) Divemaster and an Emergency First Response Instructor.
During her time on the island, she also began volunteering with the Caribbean Islands Manta Conservation Program. As a volunteer, she delivered weekly presentations to locals, tourists, and citizen scientists, aiming to collect identification photos of Devil and Manta rays. If she encountered these rays, Heather would assist in establishing long-term data records. Heather also helped combat Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease as a certified PADI Reef Renewal Diver by cleaning, fragmenting, and outplanting small corals.
The most recent step in her career journey has been applying to law school. The process takes around a year and she says that Toppel helped her with reviewing her resume, revising her personal statement, and crafting a meaningful addendum. One of the most important things Heather learned was that you never know which part of your application an admissions officer will view first, so you want to incorporate your unique story into every writing, document, and corner to paint a wonderful holistic picture.
Piece of Advice:
“You have to take charge of your life. Nobody else is going to do it for you. It's simple and may seem cliche, but when I think about doing something difficult or stepping out of my comfort zone, I remember where I go in life is up to me.”

What Recruiters Look for When Hiring
When applying for a job, the initial impression you make on a recruiter is crucial. And because recruiters don’t spend a whole lot of time scanning each application, it's essential to ensure yours stands out. There are many things that recruiters look for when going through job applications, so here are some important things to keep in mind when applying:
- Tailor your resume to the specific job, highlighting relevant skills and experiences.
- Proofread your application thoroughly and make sure it's free of errors.
- Include a well-crafted cover letter that reflects your genuine interest in the company and role.
Remember, the application process is your first opportunity to showcase who you are and why you're a great fit for the role, but interviewing is a way for them to get to know you even more. Check out this Indeed article to learn more on how to prepare for an interview.

Reaching Out to Employers on Handshake
If you attended Expo and met with recruiters there, the next best thing is to follow up. Following up after Expo is crucial as it helps to solidify the connections you made and shows initiative and interest.
One good way to stay connected is to message them on Handshake and keep the conversation going. You can do this by finding the employer’s page on Handshake, and if they have a “public staff list,” look for the recruiter you spoke with and send a message. This allows them to view your complete profile and connect your face to the conversation you had.
If you can’t find them or didn’t get their business card, don’t worry! You can still explore the company’s website staff page or LinkedIn to find and reach out to them. When it comes to contacting them, it’s best to personalize your message and reference your discussion at Expo to help refresh their memory of when you both spoke. Remember, a timely follow-up isn’t just good manners; it’s a way to stand out in their mind and show you’re serious about exploring opportunities with them!

Brythanie Joseph
Career Education Intern
|
Meet Brythanie Joseph, a sophomore health science and public health major with a minor in biology!
Brythanie is a part of the Homecoming Executive Committee, Student Government, and is a Multicultural Student Affairs Mentor. This academic year she is looking forward to building more connections and networking with new people, as well as continuing to maintain a 3.8 GPA or higher.
Her experience as a student is still evolving, but she wishes she had known in her freshman year about the many career opportunities available at Toppel.
Some ways Brythanie is #KeepinIt100 to achieve her career goals is by making sure she stays true to herself, staying headstrong, and making choices that line up with her morals and values.
Staying true to herself led her to secure a medical internship at the University of Washington, where she had the opportunity to shadow renowned surgeons in the operating room, engage with respected professionals in the county and the Centers for Disease Control, and much more!
Piece of Advice:
“Fear kills more dreams than failure ever will. Try to grasp any opportunity you can and try new things because you may never know that one leap of faith or risk you decided to take could change your life in unimaginable ways.”
