#KeepinIt100
Meet Joseph Salazar, a senior economics major with minors in chemistry and Japanese!
Joseph served six years in the Navy as a hospital corpsman. Through this experience, he had many responsibilities, which included being a pediatric treatment room supervisor at the naval hospital in Camp Pendleton and an immunizations supervisor at Evans Medical Clinic in Okinawa, Japan.
While serving, Joseph took part in humanitarian aid efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic in Guam to assist in building field hospitals to accommodate the overwhelmed permanent medical staff on the island. He also had the opportunity to train the Korean military in basic first aid procedures on a mission to South Korea.
Joseph says the Toppel Career Center has been an invaluable resource for him and he is extremely grateful for the opportunities and connections that their staff have fostered for him. Through Toppel, he learned how to market himself, build a personal brand, and remind himself of the importance of venturing outside his comfort zone!
Piece of Advice:
“My advice to other students would be to make mistakes often and learn from them. There are some things in life that are best learned the hard way. Lastly, whether you're a subject matter expert or a complete novice, always be willing to respect the advice of anyone who offers it; there is something to be gained from everyone around us.”

Laila Pettus
Career Education Intern
|
Meet Laila Pettus, a broadcast journalism & advertising double major from Washington, D.C.!
Laila is an Associate Producer & Host for UMTV’s The Culture, a reporter for Pulse, and a member of the Society of Professional Journalists.
This year, she is most looking forward to being an Associate Producer on the UMTV show 'The Culture’ and excited about stepping outside of her comfort zone and getting hands-on practice operating behind the camera.
One way Laila is #KeepinIt100 is by speaking up when she needs help. Whether it's asking for feedback, seeking advice from mentors, or collaborating with peers, she says that being honest about her needs helps her grow and ensures she is always learning and improving.
Piece of Advice:
“Always do everything out of love because eventually, love is all we have for people to remember us by.”
