#KeepinIt100
Meet Yewande Shitta-Bey, a sophomore psychology major on the pre-med track!
This past summer, Yewande had the opportunity to intern at the University of Missouri for alcohol and substance use research as part of their MU-ARTSS program. During her time there, she learned about alcoholism and related disorders, while also contributing to research.
While Yewande was a freshman, she knew she wanted to become as deeply involved in different campus organizations as she could and grow with them while she progressed through her education. By doing this, Yewande became the Distribution Director for UM's Scientifica Magazine and Freshman Liaison for 100 Strong, UM's first Black pre-health club!
Yewande says that Toppel has helped her become career-ready in various ways. For one, a Toppel staff member helped her revise her resume and informed her of the distinction between a resume and a CV. She was also a part of the Career Crawl: Arts & Sciences in NYC last spring. Moreover, she utilized Toppel's headshot photobooth to get her headshot taken and says that the Toppel Insider has provided her with valuable information about helpful resources and events.
Piece of Advice:
“There are many opportunities you'll feel underqualified for. And, honestly, you may objectively be underqualified. However, especially as an undergraduate, it's important to have faith in your potential. With every opportunity you go for, convey how you've set yourself up to be ready for the new experience. Be your first advocate and investor. When others feel your passion, they'll want to be your advocate and invest in you too.”

Answering Tough Interview Questions
Interviewing can be nerve-wracking, especially when faced with challenging questions that can sometimes trick you up. But no matter what is thrown at you, the key is to remain composed and strategic in your responses.
It's important to note that interviews are just as much about demonstrating your skills as they are about revealing your character. So approach each question as an opportunity to highlight both, and be sure to steer clear of negative responses.
By being mindful of thoughtful and professional responses, you can showcase your strengths and position yourself as a valuable candidate. If you’d like to learn more about navigating tough interview questions, then check out this Vault article that goes over some of the do’s and don’ts of answering these questions.

How to Dress for Career Fairs
First impressions are everything, and as we’re coming up on some of our major career fairs this semester, it’s best to make sure that you come dressed for success. Similar to a job interview, you should come professionally dressed to any career fair you plan on attending.
How you dress depends on the industry/job you’re applying to, so the general rule is to dress for the job. For example, if you’re attending the Accounting Career Fair, then a suit and tie might be a good idea. Whereas if you’re attending the Engineering Career Day, the attire might be a bit more relaxed.
But be sure to research and know who you plan on talking to so you can dress accordingly. If you want some more information about professional attire, check out our website and browse through our resources so that you can come prepared for any career fair or interview you partake in!

Christine Lara
Career Coach
|
Meet Christine Lara, a Biomedical Engineering major in Biomaterials and Tissue Concentration, with a minor in Philosophy!
Christine is a member of the Association of Commuter Students and the Biomedical Engineering Society.
One thing that Christine wishes she had known in her previous years at the U is the fact that you can form your own club. While it’s something she always knew, she thought it was excessively difficult. And while it does require hard work, having a great team behind you can make your goals a reality!
This semester she is #KeepinIt100 by pursuing internship opportunities that truly interest her. While she believes that any experience gained is very valuable, she would like to advocate for herself more and dive deeper into her interests by being honest with herself and her wants & needs.
By doing this, she has been able to be herself and allow her personality to come through. In turn, she feels like she is a better coworker by keeping the energy in the room fun and light and a better student by completing assignments to the best of her abilities.
Piece of Advice:
"Don't let yesterday take up too much of today."
