#KeepinIt100

Meet Sophia Plancich, a senior majoring in ecosystem science & policy and international studies with minors in art and geography!

Last year Sophia worked as a research assistant for Dr. Haoluan Wang in the geography department. During her time there, she gained experience surveying and working with focus groups and co-authored a paper with him about urban inequities and food deserts.

Sophia also interned at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center under an REU (research experience for undergraduates) as a Citizen Science intern, where she worked on an independent GIS project, which she was chosen to present at the Southern Regional Science Conference last April! Sophia was also an intern at the Xavier Cortada Foundation, a non-profit focused on facilitating social engagement and outreach regarding climate change through artwork.

As a transfer student, Sophia entered UM in the fall of her junior year and wanted to take advantage of all the resources the university offers. She used Toppel for help with resumes, cover letters, and headshots and attended many events the past year.

Piece of Advice:

“Don't forget to have fun and take advantage of all the opportunities UM offers. Most importantly, lean on your professors; mine have helped me discover so many new opportunities throughout my time here. And go 'Canes!”

Connecting With Professionals on Cane2Cane

If you’ve attended any of our career fairs, there’s a good chance that you met with a recruiter who also happened to be an alumni. So did you know that there’s a platform designed to connect you with your fellow ‘Canes?

Cane2Cane (C2C) is a platform that will help you connect with UM alumni and professionals associated with the university to help you advance in your career. The good thing about C2C is that it offers you a way to engage with them on a different level.

It’s possible that they receive dozens of messages on LinkedIn and don’t always have time to answer them. If you message them on C2C, you're more likely to get a response and make a connection! If you have someone in mind, you can directly search for them there. Or you can browse through the users based on what you’re looking for and get connected!

Mary Gorski

Career Coach

Meet Mary Gorski, a 5th year architecture student with a minor in art and art history!

Mary is a writer, designer, and photographer for Distraction Magazine. This semester she is most looking forward to enjoying her last year on campus with friends, starting up her internship again, and pursuing her independent thesis research design project.

One thing Mary wishes she had known before she came to UM was how many free and inexpensive community events there are in the area. There are a variety of opportunities, from vintage markets to jewelry-making classes, which are a good way to get to know the community and Miami.

Mary has been #KeepinIt100, starting her career by being open to new career paths and opportunities. Keeping an open mind is sometimes the best course of action. Over the summer, Mary interned with Kimley-Horn and explored a new field. She said it was an incredible experience, and she ended up receiving a full-time job offer for next summer!

Piece of Advice:

“Be selfish with your time in your 20s. This is a rare period of time where we have both autonomy and a lack of responsibilities; we should do as we please and say yes to as many opportunities as possible. Here's to making the world our best friend!”
