#UShine

Meet Madison Dantes, a senior criminology major, minoring in history & sociology!

Madison recently finished an 8-month-long internship at the Asian Pacific Development Center in Denver, CO, where she worked in the Victim Assistance Department as a human trafficking intern. In this role, she worked alongside victim advocates who assist victims of crime through the criminal justice system and provide service referrals based on the client's needs. Through this experience, Madison was able to learn more about the crime of human trafficking, and the services available to support survivors.

Over spring break, Madison will be attending the Career Crawl: Arts & Sciences in NYC, where she will get to meet with major companies and network with UM alumni living in New York City. Before she applied, she met with a Toppel career coach to look over her resume and advises anyone to come to Toppel and have their resume reviewed before they apply to a new job or internship as well!

Piece of Advice:

“Seek any kind of work opportunity available to you, even if it doesn't directly relate to your career goals. I've had several jobs in college, and while these positions were not directly aligned with my future goals, I've learned so many valuable skills that I can bring with me into any role after college.”

Following Up With Recruiters After Expo

Now that you’ve taken that first step and attended Expo, the next step is to follow through with the connections you made. If you met with a recruiter and have their information, it’s good to follow up via email or simply message them on LinkedIn or Handshake.

By doing this, it shows that you're interested and would like to work with them based on what you’ve learned. Don’t know what to write? Check out this article by Forbes that covers ten things you should do when messaging recruiters online.

Looking at the Employers you Met With at Expo on Handshake

If you met with an employer at Expo and like how things went, a good idea would be to look at their profile on Handshake to see what positions they have open. This can help you navigate the conversation to a specific topic you’d like to talk about when you follow up with them.

To do this, either search for the company in the “employer” tab on the left-hand side of your Handshake page or go to the Expo employer list and find the employer you’re looking for. Once you're on their page, either click on the jobs tab or scroll down until you see "Jobs at (name of company)" in the right-hand column and look at the jobs they have available there!

The benefit of using Handshake for this, compared to some other job sites, is that the positions they post are specifically for students. Plus, if you see the recruiter you spoke with at Expo on their company page, then you can send them a personalized message about the position and what you spoke about when you met.

Preparing for Interviews

Being nervous or anxious before an interview is completely normal, but preparing for an interview is sure to help ease those nerves a bit. In actuality, it's a whole lot easier than you'd think! There is a list of things to keep in mind, but some of the core things to remember are to:

  • Do research on the company and have well-thought-out questions about the role/company.
  • Practice talking about yourself, your experiences, and how they relate to the role.
  • Present yourself professionally, while also being your true authentic self.
A lot of people tend to overthink the interview process, but it’s helpful to just look at it as a conversation meant for you and an employer to get to know each other. If you want some practice, then utilize Big Interview to do some practice interviews. Nowadays, some recruiters are even turning to one-way video interviews, so if you’d like more information on how to navigate those, check out this article on Indeed to learn more.
