#UShine

Meet Laralyn Jackson, a senior journalism major from Queens, NY!

Laralyn is an active member of The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), Society of Professional Journalists, the National Council of Negro Women, and Gyrl Wonder Leadership Academy. She’s also a Senior Staff Writer for The Miami Hurricane, a reporter for UMTV, a sportswriter for the Ibis, and is working on writing for Gravity. She also does some freelance reporting & writing on the side, telling inspiring stories.

Last year, Laralyn won the Dwight Lauderdale Scholarship through the South Florida Chapter of NABJ and currently interns at NBC 6 as an associate producer! In this role, she writes stories for anchors, edits, and creates graphics. She also has the opportunity to shadow anchors, executive producers, directors, and reporters.

As a former Toppel intern, she says Toppel helped her prepare for her interviews on every level. This includes having her resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn reviewed, as well as doing practice to get critiqued on her performance.

Piece of Advice:

“Be kind and patient with yourself; embrace your imperfections and see them as learning experiences. Keep your eye on the prize and remember your purpose for pursuing your dreams. Everyone's trajectory is unique to them so try your best not to compare yourself to others. Keep up with your work and consistently display it – you never know who's watching. Lastly, make sure to have fun and enjoy every single step of your exciting journey!”

The Architecture Career Forum brings together renowned architects, industry experts, and passionate students. This event is designed to provide you with a rich and immersive experience, ensuring that you leave with a renewed sense of purpose and direction in your architectural journey.

Register today for the Architecture Career Forum next Thursday, February 22. from 1 – 5 PM at the Lakeside Village Expo Center. Can’t make it? Then you can also attend our Virtual Architecture Career Forum on March 1st from 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM.

Take a Professional Headshot Before Expo

When you meet with employers at the Job & Internship Expo, chances are that you’ll end up connecting with them on LinkedIn. And the last thing you’d want is for them to completely forget who you are after the fair. When you think about it, they will be meeting hundreds of other students that day so it’s not unusual for them to forget.

Aside from having a professional online presence, having a professional headshot on your profile helps employers put a name to a face long after you meet them. So before expo, we encourage you to stop by our professional headshot photo booth so that you can be prepared to sustain those connections even after you both leave expo.

Sophia Kyriazis

Social Media Intern

Meet Sophia Kyriazis, a junior public relations student with a minor in marketing!

Sophia is a Co-Founder, and VP of Member Experience for the Scholars of Finance club, and a member of the UM Hellenic Society.

Sophia says that #UShine encouraged her to explore options and put herself out there. She commits herself to doing this by updating her Handshake and LinkedIn profiles for internship and career possibilities, taking courses that prepare her for professional settings, attending events on campus, and networking with peers with similar career interests.

All these experiences have led her to the positions she currently holds, and she looks forward to even more opportunities!

Piece of Advice:

“A small step forward is better than no steps. Additionally, it is a great feeling to look back on all the little steps that have taken you far and know your following goals are only a few steps ahead.”
