#UShine
Meet Layne Nagele, a senior psychology major minoring in biology and journalism!
One step Layne has taken in her career journey was becoming a research assistant at the MANATEE Lab. While there, she overcame challenges such as learning how to clean psychological data and code in R-Studio.
Layne has also been studying for the LSAT to further her career goal of becoming a lawyer. She says she has been setting aside time outside of her classes each week to prepare for this academic milestone.
Layne states that Toppel has helped her with her career readiness by always being welcoming and eager to answer her questions. With Toppel’s help, she had her resume and cover letters reviewed and was able to connect with other students studying for the LSAT who were on the same path as her.
Piece of Advice:
“Don’t be afraid to explore interests outside your major, and have a flexible mindset. I added my minor in Journalism halfway through my junior year, even though it does not directly correlate with my major. This allowed me to explore a new passion and has introduced me to amazing students and professors I otherwise would not have met during my time at the U.”

Tips on Writing Cover Letters That Stand Out
Sometimes, when people see a cover letter requirement on a job application, they may be reluctant to include one. But what if we told you that cover letters could be helpful? Because not many are willing to write a tailored cover letter for each job they're applying to, you’re bound to stand out in the eyes of the recruiter if you do. But one thing that makes a cover letter so valuable is that it’s your chance to talk directly to the recruiter…without actually talking to them.
A cover letter is your opportunity to explain in detail what your resume briefly covers. It adds depth to your application and helps the recruiter understand what you’re capable of beyond your bullet-pointed resume. Not only is it your chance to highlight how or why your skills would be valuable to the role you’re applying for, but it also gives you a chance to express yourself and your interest in the role or company. If you plan on writing a cover letter for that next job application, check out this Vault article that covers three tips on writing a cover letter that stands out!
