#UShine

Meet Jay Moyer, a sophomore English major with minors in Journalism and Music Industry!

Last semester, Jay had an internship as a student editor with Sinking City magazine, The University of Miami Graduate School's literary journal. He says this taught him a lot about the publishing industry and that he got to help curate a selection of poems for the magazine and read so much creative work from all over the world.

On top of that, Jay recently worked his way up to being an editor at Distraction magazine, where he gets to further pursue his interests in journalism, writing columns and collaborating with others on upcoming issues.

Jay participated in the Career Crawl: Arts & Sciences in NYC, which allowed him to meet so many people in a variety of industries he was interested in and opened his eyes to what those industries look like in the heart of the city. Jay says that Toppel and their career coaches have helped him sharpen his resume and interpersonal skills in preparation for the professional world.

Piece of Advice:

“I would say above all else, don't put too much pressure on yourself. Try the activities and opportunities that feel right for you, while not being scared to branch out and try new things. College is a time to figure out where you belong, and a school like UM will give you plenty of opportunities to do so as long as you keep an open mind!”

Tips for Attending a Virtual Career Fair

With a lot of things going virtual, something like a virtual career fair may sound odd. But what if we told you that there are ways to make the most out of a virtual career fair?

At the end of the day, virtual career fairs are no different from in-person fairs. The main goal is to meet and engage with employers to learn more about their companies and the opportunities they offer.

So when you attend, it's important to be attentive and ask specific questions about the companies that interest you. This will help you stand out and signal to the employer that you’d like to work with them.

If a specific company interests you, it’s best to get the recruiter's contact information, follow up the next day and ask to schedule a meeting to dive deeper.

Gabriella Ortega

Guest Experience Assistant

Meet Gabriella Ortega, a freshman from Colombia majoring in economics with a minor in entrepreneurship!

With it being her first semester, one way that Gabriella was able to #UShine was by learning about all the different opportunities and activities the university has to offer, and how they support students in their personal or academic lives.

As she is almost done with her first semester at the U and working at Toppel, she says that The Toppel Career Center has given her the knowledge on the steps to find an internship or job for her sophomore year!

Piece of Advice:

"There are no stupid questions; it is better to ask than to be wrong because you didn't."
