#UShine

Meet Lauren Tierney, a senior neuroscience major with minors in chemistry, biochemistry & molecular biology, and dance!

At the end of her sophomore year, she applied to the Henry G. Steinbrenner Scholars Program at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. During this internship, she began a research project exploring potential strategies for the use of new human induced pluripotent stem cell technology in the treatment of chronic spinal cord injury pain. After completion of this program, she was offered the opportunity to continue investigating this topic within the lab throughout her junior year. Currently, she is preparing an abstract and poster to present these findings at the 2023 Society for Neuroscience conference in Washington D.C!

Before applying to any internships or leadership roles, she sent in her resume to Toppel for review to ensure it was in the best shape to support her application. By doing so, she received advice on different formatting techniques and methods of improving her writing to elucidate her contributions within each of her previous roles.

Piece of Advice:

“Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! The first time you hear ‘no’ may be discouraging, but it’s completely normal to not get every single internship or job you apply to. Take the time to review your application, find any weak points, and use that knowledge to bolster your next application. By the time you reach success, you will have gone through so much career development and will be prepared to take on your new role confidently!”

Simone Thom

Career Coach

Meet Simone Thom, a sophomore Health Science: Pre-Physical Therapy major with a minor in Business Entrepreneurship and Sports Medicine! She is a part of the Yellow Rose Society, Lift Our Voices, Sportsfest, Volleyball, and The Launchpad: Women Making Moves.

One way that she embodied #UShine was by updating her resume to tailor it to specific job opportunities and internships. Through this, she was able to secure a research fellowship this year working with Dr. Julia Dallman and Millie Rogers to see how different genes can potentially impact neurological disorders and behavior.
