Meet Ashlyn Mock, a third-year architectural engineering major!
This summer she participated in the NSF REU (National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergrads) where she worked alongside Dr. Ali Ghahremaninezhad and his PhD student, Sadegh Tale. During this program, she worked on two ongoing projects about coastal infrastructure and resilience, as well as ways to improve resiliency in our concrete infrastructure which illuminated a path for her to consider pursuing research in material sciences!
During one of the REU workshops, she met with a Toppel staff member, who assisted her in updating her resume for scholarship applications. She is thankful for the resources provided by Toppel, as she learned how to effectively present her research experiences on her resume.
Piece of Advice:
“Make an effort to get to know your professors and faculty members. UM has a relatively small community, which provides unique opportunities to connect with professors beyond the classroom setting. Professors aren't just educators; they are willing to guide you, facilitate connections with others, and engage in meaningful conversations over a cup of coffee! You would be surprised by the doors you can open when you take the initiative to build these relationships.”

Make Connections on Cane2Cane Before Expo
Did you know that you can use Cane2Cane as a tool in your job search? Because some employers attending Expo also have ties to the university, some may even be on Cane2Cane! All you have to do is take a look at the list of employers attending, and search for them on Cane2Cane. From there, you can then use the filters at the top to narrow down your search.
Let’s say you find someone with ties to the company you're looking for, but they no longer work there. The great thing about networking is that you can still reach out to them to gain information on the interview process, work culture, and more about the company overall. Through this connection, they can even connect you with someone who still does work there, which could potentially enhance the possibility of you finding the right opportunity!

Valentina De Gennaro
Career Coach
|
Meet Valentina De Gennaro, a senior Biomedical Engineering major in the 5-year BS/MS program!
Aside from being a career coach at Toppel, she is also part of the Biomedical Engineering Society and the Society of Women Engineers.
She says that in order to achieve her career goals, she used a lot of the resources that Toppel offers such as attending career fairs, Handshake, and resume reviews so that she could make connections and apply for jobs and internships. This led her to get an internship during the summer at a medical device company and connect with professors so that she could begin doing research during the academic year.
This semester, she's most looking forward to starting her grad school classes and meeting all her new professors. In her previous years at the U, she says she wishes she had known how important it was to connect with professors and get involved early on in your career.
Piece of Advice:
"It's never too late to start."
