#UShine

Meet Ines Ruiz, a senior who is triple majoring in Marketing, Economics, and English with a Concentration in Creative Writing! Last spring, she started working at Siemens Digital Industries Software as an Energy Industry Marketing Intern and has been there ever since. She says she really enjoys her role at Siemens, given that it not only provides her with hands-on experience in the marketing & business fields, but it also prompts her to immerse herself in topics that are shaping the future of our world such as clean energy, sustainability, and AI.

By working with a diverse and international team of engineers, she says she’s been able to broaden and complement her business skillset as she’s constantly merging and combining different disciplines. She feels that one of the most valuable lessons from the internship is it gives her the ability to cultivate an interdisciplinary mindset where she can blend business with technology, creativity with technicality, and marketing with engineering.

She says that Toppel has encouraged her to start developing a career-oriented mentality, from setting up LinkedIn and Handshake profiles to improving her resume and building her network. In this way, Toppel not only made sure that she was ready and prepared for when an opportunity came her way but also taught her the importance of making these opportunities happen by making the right connections and by being proactive in the job search.

Piece of Advice:

“View internships as opportunities to try things outside of your comfort zone. In my case, I hadn’t really pictured myself working in tech given my business background and yet so far, the experience has been amazing. Don’t be afraid to give new things a shot, you might be surprised with the end results!”

Find Events on Handshake

When it comes to finding career-related events happening on campus, Handshake is the best place to check. On Handshake, you’ll be able to find upcoming events based on type, day, location, employer, and more!

You can easily do this by logging into Handshake and clicking the “events” tab in the left-hand section which will then take you to the events page where you can apply any relevant filters as it pertains to the type of event you’re looking for.

At first glance, you can see the type of upcoming events, such as career fairs, info sessions, networking events, etc. but you can also see which employers are hiring! This is extremely valuable because if you attend a networking session, for example, and the employer happens to be hiring, there is a possibility that you can get a job through networking simply by having this knowledge at your fingertips.

Andrea Lizanel Nieves Méndez

Career Coach

Meet Andrea Lizanel Nieves Méndez, a sophomore, born and raised in Puerto Rico who is studying Biomedical Engineering and is on a Premed track with minors in Marketing and Health Management and Policy!

She is the co-founder and PR chair for the Puerto Ricanes club, an active member of the Surfrider Foundation, Caribbean Students Association, a campus ambassador for the Gift of Life bone marrow registry, and served as Education chair for Ocean Awareness Week last spring.

To her, #UShine is when you are your most authentic self and portray that to other people, whether it be employers, professors, or friends. Being herself and letting her accomplishments and aspirations speak for themselves has granted her most of the opportunities she has today.

Some opportunities that being her most authentic self has given her was a shadowing opportunity with a neurosurgeon, which also facilitated the creation of the Puerto Ricanes club and helped her obtain my position as PR chair in it!
