#LevelUp

Meet Chrysanthi Makrygeorgou, a junior from Athens, Greece who is pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration in Economics with minors in Sustainable Business and Marine Policy!

Having witnessed the hardships of disadvantaged societies in West Africa in 2018, she founded the non-profit organization EDUC-AID which is based in Nigeria. Through this work, she liaises regularly with educators and church administrators in Nigeria to identify the needs of schools there so she can organize fundraising and school supply donation events according to their needs.

Her love for the sea pushed her to intern alongside researchers at the highly respected Greek Institute of Marine Conservation, Archipelagos, where she developed environmental management and conservation strategies to protect the environment from microplastics in the oceans. In the same spirit, she also interned for Unibros Shipping Corp. where she researched the market for new technologies, developed eco-friendly marine fuels, and prepared reports with alternative options on future marine fuels with minimum carbon footprints.

Piece of Advice:

“Get an early start, grow your skills and knowledge, and always seek internship opportunities. Toppel is a great resource as they have helped give me insights about job and internship opportunities!”

Tips for International Students Searching for Jobs on Handshake

Finding work as an international student can be difficult, and while opportunities may seem limited...did you know that you can search for employers who are more than willing to hire you as an international student?

As you search for jobs on Handshake, all you have to do is click on “All filters” in the toolbar at the top of the page. From there you can scroll down until you see “Work Authorization” which will show two options: one for employers who will sponsor you or don’t require you to have a US visa, and the other is for employers who accept OPT/CPT. Check the box that is most applicable, and it will then show you all the relevant opportunities for you!

As an international student, you must never forget the value that you bring to these companies. Sometimes recruiters are looking specifically for international students because you can offer a different perspective to the team. As you begin searching for your next opportunity, here’s an article that outlines some of the do’s and don’ts for international job seekers.

Student-Athlete Career Fair

Are you a student-athlete looking for a job or internship? If so, we will be hosting our student-athlete career fair next Monday at the Lakeside Village Expo Center from 4 PM – 6 PM! This opportunity will give you the chance to meet with employers who are looking to connect with UMiami student-athletes from all majors, degrees, and levels.

With spending a lot of time training during your college career, it’s understandable if you haven’t found too much time to focus on internships. But it’s important to know that your career as an athlete is a career in and of itself and may have taught you many valuable skills that can be transferred directly (or indirectly) into the field in which you want to pursue.

If you want an example, check out this
student-athlete guide to getting a job. Also, feel free to visit our custom career content site that is geared specifically toward student-athletes here at The U!

The Butler Center will be hosting its 10th annual Leadership Women’s Whitely Leadership Symposium (WWLS) this Friday from 4 PM – 8:30 PM!

This year's symposium theme, “Era of Empowerment” will inspire you to analyze the past, honor the present, and build toward a future of excellence. You will be redefining and reshaping your role within a global community by engaging in dialogue and activities with local trailblazers through  workshops and peer-to-peer interaction. This symposium serves to empower you with the strength to find your purpose in a new era of leaders.

The day consists of networking and workshop sessions with female prospective leaders in the Miami community. The highlight of the symposium is their guest speaker, Latesha Byrd, CEO of Perfeqta: Career & Talent Development Consultant. Through the years, WWLS has convened 700+ student and community attendees annually to explore the day-to-day triumphs and challenges women face. Although this conference serves to empower women and provide them with the knowledge and experiences to lead, the symposium will be open to all individuals across the gender spectrum. Julia Carey

Graduate Assistant

Meet Julia Carey, a first-year master's student at the Frost School of Music studying Instrumental (Flute) Performance from New Jersey!

Because going to grad school for performance is not an easy feat, she said she had to #LevelUp by sacrificing a LOT of time in order to get to UM. This meant she had to say no to hanging out with friends for the night or going on fun trips so that she could focus her energy on perfecting her craft, which she says is an ongoing process!

Being the only incoming master’s student in her program, she states that there was a lot of pressure for her to push herself beyond what she thought she was capable of this time last year.

Piece of Advice:

“If you practice stupidly, you will perform stupidly.” Sure, this is music-specific, but it can also apply to most things in life.
