#LevelUp

Meet Mohammed Aljurayyan, a Business Analytics and Business Technology major!

After realizing that an internship experience was the prerequisite to being an effective future professional, he searched on Handshake and secured an internship with Heinemann Americas as an order manager. During his internship he processed and managed their orders in Microsoft Excel sheets. He says this experience helped him develop a strong sense of responsibility and trained him to be disciplined and organized.

Mohammed says that Toppel has been his compassionate guide throughout his journey. Toppel not only led him to the finest opportunity and trained him to make the most out of it, but they also helped him see and value his own potential. He says now that he knows his worth and is also aware of market trends and demands, he feels well-equipped to step into the professional world with confidence!

Piece of Advice:

“Do not shy away from seeking help and guidance. Believe that productive criticism and sincere guidelines will lead you to success like nothing else.”

Three Things Hiring Managers Always Say and What They Mean

Recounting some of the things that were said during your interview can either be really hopeful or really discouraging. Sometimes guessing what someone may have meant when they said something can leave our brains stuck in a place of uncertainty.

After attending Expo, you may even be looking back and thinking about some of the things that were said during your conversations. Luckily in the article below, you'll hear from a former recruiter who goes over some of the top three things hiring managers say and what they actually mean.

It's good to remember that when it comes to dwelling on the past and waiting for future outcomes, it’s always helpful to be present, patient, and confident that you did your best while realizing that what's meant to be will be.

Following up With Recruiters on Handshake After Expo

Now that you’ve successfully networked and navigated Expo, the next best thing is to follow up with the recruiters you’ve spoken with. Just like with any interview, it’s essential that you follow up and send a thank you note to whoever interviewed you; and career fairs are no different. You should have received business cards from the individuals you spoke with or asked for their information, but if you didn’t you can always resort to Handshake.

To find the employers, you can go to the “see all employers” tab under the event and find the company you spoke with. You can then go to their individual employer page, which may have their “public staff list.” If you see your interviewer there, you can simply message them by clicking on their name and going to their page.

If you cannot find the person who interviewed you, you’ll have to take matters into your own hands and do your own research on the web. Companies usually have a staff page on their website or LinkedIn page, but here are some tips on how to find their contact information if you still can't find it.

Guest Experience Assistant

Meet Laura Landetta, a Junior International Studies and Political Science major with minors in Economics, who was born and raised in Ecuador! Laura is the Vice President & Co-Founder of First Gen Canes, the Dean’s Ambassador of the College of Arts & Sciences, and the Elections Commissioner for Student Government.

One way she had to #LevelUp was by achieving the goals she set for herself during her first semester. She says she has come to realize that the decisions she makes during her time at UM are critical steps that will shape her for the rest of her life.

One thing she has done is be open to networking with other people who can help her in her career and who can guide her, as well as not being afraid to pursue what she wants or even to begin new things that can be intimidating.

Piece of Advice:

“Always keep the #LevelUp mentality.”
