#LevelUp

Meet Katerina Fernandez, a senior Political Science, Spanish, Classics, Theatre Arts, and Philosophy major!

She now in the process of applying to law school and has been put in contact with some of the top lawyers in the country who have attended some of the top schools. She says they have given her so much valuable advice and knowledge that she will keep with her for the rest of her life!

She says that Toppel was one of the first pre-law resources she came across at the U. She was able to meet with different Toppel career coaches who could empathize with her experience and gave her some of the most valuable advice she has ever received about her law school journey as a first-generation college student.

Piece of Advice:

“It's important to recognize that you don't have to go through college alone and that there are people and resources available to support you! Don’t be afraid to admit you don’t know the answer or try and get it wrong. College is not only about learning academically but also learning about life, and part of that experience is making mistakes and learning from them. There are so many resources available to us at UM and in the Miami community. You just have to reach out to the community around you, your professors, peers, and student organizations. Someone is always willing to help!”

This is UM's largest hiring event so don’t miss out on the opportunity to increase your chances of securing an internship for the summer or even landing a full-time job after graduation. With that being said, here are some ways you can prepare for Expo:

  • Have your resume critiqued by Toppel and bring multiple copies.
  • Research the companies attending.
  • Be prepared to interview on the spot with answers and questions ready.
  • Business professional attire is recommended.
  • Must be a University of Miami degree-seeking student or alumni.
Whether this is your first career fair or you’ve been going to fairs your whole college career, here are some tips on how to prepare for a career fair.

Researching Employers Attending Expo on Handshake

As you prepare for Expo, it’s essential that you research the employers that will be present. With over a hundred employers attending, there’s bound to be at least one employer with a job or internship there that you would like to engage with.

Like preparing for a job interview, it’s vital that you research the company you’re interested in so that you know whom you’re talking to and what to talk about. Not only does it show that you’re informed, but it also shows that you’re interested in their company and the position.

When you register for Expo on Handshake, you’ll see a list of employers attending in the left-hand corner. You can also navigate the tab above that shows all employers, as well as employers that you’re following. Through this, you’ll be able to browse through the employers that you’re interested in and go to their profiles to see the information they have on their pages. You don’t have to stop there, as you can always do a Google search to find out even more information!

BreakThru Diversity Mixer

When it comes to careers, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) plays an important role in how one may feel within the workplace. To ensure that students get a chance to speak with potential future employers beforehand, we will be hosting our BreakThru Diversity Mixer tomorrow from 4 PM - 6 PM at the Lakeside Village Auditorium & Expo Center.

Our BreakThru Diversity Mixer is a career event designed for underrepresented student populations, including Black, Indigenous, & People of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQ+, first generation, and students with disabilities to connect with employers who value and promote DEIB. This event serves as a lead into our signature
Job & Internship Expo hiring event and supports future professionals by providing them an early opportunity to connect with employers before attending Expo. Register on Handshake to attend!
