#LevelUp

Meet Jacques Calixte! He is a junior premedical student deciding on majors both in and out of the sciences – currently, in-between Philosophy or Biochemistry.

He applied to a national pre-health summer internship opportunity known as Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) and was fortunate enough to be matched on the medical track as 1 of 40 medical scholars to his top site at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), which enabled him to spend the summer there amongst their medical school staff.

Specifically, he was taking classes, attending seminars, and gaining clinical exposure opportunities, with the goal of comprehensively preparing him to apply to the medical schools of his choice while also networking with his cohort and physicians around the area. For this experience, he applied for and received a grant from the Toppel Internship Fund. This grant allowed him to live in New York City during the duration of the internship by helping pay for certain expenses. Additionally, he was placed in the Toppel Internship Program which allowed him to reflect on the experience and make sure he was using it effectively. He also used Toppel's services in other capacities in the past, namely their mock practice interviews.

Piece of advice:
“Networking, utilizing resources, and being proactive in finding opportunities are three of the biggest reasons people succeed. Finding ways to do these while at a great institution like UM will set up your career for life, so I recommend starting now. There are so many great resources at your disposal so don't let them go to waste!”

#LevelUp for Expo

Did you know that we will be hosting an event on Friday, September 30 (12 PM – 1 PM) to help you prepare for Expo?

During our virtual #LevelUp for Expo prep session, Dave Ong, past NACE President and HR leader at organizations such as Maximus, Booz Allen Hamilton, Citigroup, and Capital One, will share with students the key strategies they can utilize to make effective connections and highlight their fit to employers.

If you're looking to gain an edge over the competition at Expo, register on Handshake or join on Zoom for this incredible opprotunity!

Using Handshake to Get The Most Out of Expo

Once you complete your Handshake profile, you can easily register for Expo right there on your profile. On the events page when you highlight the Career Fair filter, you will see the "Job & Internship Expo Fall 2022" with all the information and the option to register in the top right-hand section of the page under the Expo banner. Some of the best ways to utilize Handshake to prepare you for Expo is by looking at the employers who will be attending.

On the Expo event page, all you have to do is click on “see more employers” and on that page, it will show you everything you need to know about the employers that will be there as well as the open positions at their company. On the left-hand side, you will also see a column with filters that you can use to tailor your search of the companies in attendance. Remember that it is also helpful to do further research on the companies you’re most interested in to make yourself stand out from the crowd!

Syianni Cook

Employer Engagement Intern

Syianni Cook is a first-year psychology major from Pennsauken, New Jersey! She is currently a part of the Student Government Organization, United Black Students Organization, and The Council of Negro Women.

Piece of advice:
“Understand that things won’t always go as planned or as you want them, and being okay with that. Getting worked up over inevitable things does nothing but create more stress for yourself, and after implementing this, my life has improved.”
