#LevelUp

Meet Abbie Szewczyk! She is a junior Motion Pictures major who recently interned with Dolphin Entertainment, which sparked her obsession with screenwriting. With Dolphin, she served as a creative development intern. The position involved composing script coverage, identifying potential actors for feature films, and research. Currently, she’s working remotely for Stewart Talent, a New York talent agency. With Stewart, she assists its Film/Theatre department.

Her role involves editing self-tapes, updating clients' calendars, and formatting submissions to casting directors, among other things. She started the role at the beginning of Fall 2022 but is excited to work closely with the company throughout the semester. She cites Toppel’s Internship Program as being a major component that enabled her to work with Dolphin Entertainment for academic credit over the summer and refers to Toppel’s drop-in coaching as her second home during application season.

Piece of advice:
“Network with anyone/everyone! I frequently send industry professionals "cold emails." With each email, I introduce myself, compliment the professional's work I greatly admire and request an informational interview. The point of a cold email is to simply hear about the professional's life! Every professional has a different path, and it's helpful to rehear this as a young artist in the industry. The process initially appears daunting, yet it has provided me with incredible advice and tips from the industry's best.”

Rachel Bergeron

Graphic Design Intern

Rachel Bergeron is a senior Biochemistry & Nutrition major with a minor in Chemistry and Graphic Design from Atlanta, GA. On campus, she serves as a Community Assistant in Lakeside Village, a secretary for the campuses section of The National Council of Negro Women, and an active member of the Daytime Committee of Hurricane Productions.

She says that one way she had to #LevelUp was by being proactive and networking to achieve her goal of securing a lucrative internship this past summer. During her sophomore year, she researched several different companies and programs she was interested in and marked her calendar of their application open and close dates for the fall. Then during her junior year, she sharpened her resume and reached out to professors for a general letter of recommendation while following the application calendar she created. By taking these steps, she secured an internship with the Estée Lauder Companies in Manhattan, New York this past summer!

She was assigned to work with their brand Aveda as a Global Creative Development Lauder Summer Intern where she was able to do things like support art direction by researching the chemistry of hero product ingredients and translating that into digestible material and visual application. She also researched and compiled inspiration for either a broad concept or a specific shot to prepare for upcoming photoshoots/campaigns.

Piece of advice:
“There is no rush to have all the answers; I spent too much time worrying and wondering what was next for me instead of just exploring more things that may be of interest. Sometimes when I would look around me it seemed like everyone had things all figured out, but since talking to more and more people, many of us have those same feelings and questions about our future.”
