#LevelUp

Meet Carly Ann Coombs! She is a Senior Public Health Major with a minor in Chemistry.

She is the community service chair for Phi Delta Epsilon and the co-founder of Project Patient, a non-profit whose goal is to reduce the gap between patient needs and solutions. She was a part of ACTS (Adolescent Counseling and Testing Services) in which she became a certified HIV/STD counselor which led her to a job at UM/Jackson Hospital.

Although becoming a pre-medical student can be an incredibly daunting task, she truly believes you can accomplish anything with a strong village! She says she could not have done it without the immense support system at UM and especially at Toppel. When she started getting medical school interviews, she was nervous and as a first-generation student, she felt very lost at times. Toppel supported her, gave her wise counsel, and a lot of preparation so that when she went into her interviews, she felt extremely prepared. She says she is so grateful for all the help at Toppel and has recently been accepted into medical school!

Piece of Advice: “My biggest advice is there is no shame in asking for help. No one can take on big challenges alone! Find resources at school and make study groups. If you are pre-med, my biggest advice is that this road is hard, you are going to fail sometimes, but remember your why and stick to your dream, it will all work out in the end.”

The Value of Networking

One of the most important things that anyone in the professional space can do is expand their network. Networking is more than just mingling and handing out business cards, it’s about making true connections that can help open doors. When people say “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” it is true to a certain degree. Yes, while your skills are one of the most essential assets that you bring to the job, sometimes who you know can open that door that allows you to display those skills in the first place.

Very few people have gotten to where they are completely on their own, whether that be directly or indirectly. Your experiences build upon themselves, and everyone you encounter becomes a part of your network. Everyone knows someone…who knows someone else, and the further you expand your network, the more people you’re able to connect with. While it may not always be an easy task, networking is a life-long process. So here are 8 tips from Forbes that can help you grow and become a better networker.

Mary Gorski

Career Coach

Meet Mary Gorski! She is a junior architecture student minoring in fine art. Aside from being a career coach here at Toppel, she is also a tutor at the Camner Tutoring Center.

She says that this year she had to #LevelUp when she started applying for jobs and internships. Instead of keeping herself in a box and only applying to opportunities that she was a 100% match for, she started applying to anything that interested her. She redid her resume and created a portfolio website to polish her professional presence. Although it’s a tedious process, getting reorganized has helped her stay patient when trying to find the best internship for her.

Piece of Advice:
“Be selfish in your 20’s. This is probably the only time in our lives when we’re adults with no one depending on us. We should do what we want and say yes to as many opportunities as possible!”
