#LevelUp

Meet Nick Tricarico! He is a first-year law student at the University of Miami School of Law and a UM alumnus with a B.A. in Political Science and International Studies.

During his junior year at the University of Miami, he and two of his classmates (Noah Warren and Jake Linder) started Waffle Cabin Miami, which now operates as one of over 30 nationwide Waffle Cabin franchises. They have a mobile unit (food trailer), which is South Florida's exclusive location. His role has mainly involved compliance with corporate operations as well as various local, state, and national business licenses, health protocols, and tax procedures.

From his first days of orientation as an undergraduate freshman, Toppel stood out as a key resource for career development outside of the classroom. The office has helped him to narrow his professional interests as he has advanced through multiple levels of studies and is a great resource for any students who may be experiencing something similar. He was first exposed to the Toppel Career Center during Toppelfest in 2018, and just recently he was able to experience the event from a vendor's perspective as Waffle Cabin Miami was invited to serve hundreds of waffles to the incoming freshman class!

Piece of advice:

“Take advantage of the opportunities that come with attending a world-famous institution within one of the world's fastest-growing urban areas. The city of Miami itself has something to offer to people of all backgrounds, and it is one of the most unique aspects of being a 'Cane. Very few college students are able to learn and grow within an international metropolis like Miami, and that can be easy to take for granted.”

Live Job & Internship Feeds by School/College

Internships are practically a necessity when it comes to breaking into your career, and doing an internship while in college can double your chances of getting a job after graduation. Here at Toppel, we have been working with each UM school/college to develop live job and internship feeds, which link you directly to internships in your major or field of interest right on your school’s website! These opportunities are specifically tailored to your field and could even help you explore different career options that you might not have considered. You can go to your school’s website to access them or just look for your school below:

To learn more about these feeds, check out this News@theU article.

Request a Video Chat With a Recruiter on Handshake

If you’re on the fence about an opportunity that you came across on Handshake and would like to know more information, did you know that you can request a video chat with the recruiter? Right on the homepage of your Handshake account, you will see “1-on-1-Video Chats” where you can sign up for an allocated time slot with a recruiter to find out more about the position you’re interested in, or to learn more about the company in general. In some cases, the recruiter may not offer 1-on-1 chats, but you can still message them to set up a chat or send them your questions to answer, but in all cases, it’s best to have some questions lined up to help you set yourself up for success!

How to Write a Resume with No Work Experience

Your resume should highlight a variety of experiences you’ve gained, including work experience. You may be wondering, “how do I write a resume and fill a whole page when I don’t have any work experience yet?” It may not be as difficult as you think.

In this article by Forage, they offer a step-by-step guide that can teach you how to showcase your skills and wow employers with your potential. One way you can do this is to pull from the job description and highlight the experience that you do have such as hard, soft, and/or transferrable skills that you may have gained from volunteering or even from class!

While the LGBTQIA+ community is becoming more visible each day, they still face many challenges. Safe spaces for them vary from place to place, and in some cases, from day to day. Coming Out isn’t just a one-time event for them ... it’s an ongoing activity, whether it be at a new project, or a new office, or meeting a new friend. There’s no right or wrong way to navigate this space, but they all have stories about their coming out experiences.

Every year on October 11th, Coming Out is recognized through activities and events across the nation and the globe. Following last year's successful inaugural event, iPride is planning to host its National Coming Out Day (NCOD) Virtual Summit, which will include featured speakers, a virtual job fair, and content focused on many personal and professional topics of interest. Participation is entirely FREE for all university students and alumni.

Jaylon Virgil

Graphic Design Intern

Meet Jaylon Virgil! He is a Junior Computer Science major with a minor in math, from the D.C. area.

This year, he is looking forward to diving deep into his major while taking a focused course load and developing portfolio projects useful to his career development. One way he had to #LevelUp was by being adaptable and addressing any shortcomings he noticed when trying to achieve his goals. By actively recognizing and enhancing the skills he needs to improve, he is confident that he can succeed in any opportunity that comes his way!

Piece of Advice:
“You can always include projects (that can come directly from the courses you already take) in lieu of experience for internships!”
