#LevelUp

Meet Isabella Fodera! She is a junior Finance major who also has her real estate license in New York. She started out interning at Avison Young Commercial Realty, an internship she got through Handshake that she learned about through The Toppel Career Center, and she was able to intern remotely during her time studying abroad in Paris.

When she returned to the US, she used her knowledge from her internship and worked for Berkshire Hathaway as a Marketing Director. This position was very Tech-focused, which helped digitally transform their business. Toppel has helped her #LevelUp by giving her the knowledge and tools to write her resume, leading her to an internship (via Handshake), teaching her the art of salary negotiation, and providing networking advice.

Piece of advice:

“I use LinkedIn frequently as well as attend networking events in every city I visit. I think it’s important to cultivate meaningful professional relationships to truly create the career and life you want. I want students to not be afraid to reach out to anyone for help. Use resources, such as the Toppel Career Center, researchers in and outside of the UM community, and professionals you look up to. Students should know their worth and allow doors to open for them. Don’t let your major or “straight and narrow path” define you. Life is interdisciplinary, and cultivating your relationships, and your passions is how to get the most out of your career!”

Professional Standards

As you transfer into the workforce, you will continue to learn more and more about professionalism as you go. Here at Toppel, we want you to be the most prepared you can be when you meet face-to-face with employers who have had years of professional experience under their belts. That’s where our Professional Standards & Student Responsibilities come in! When it comes to career fairs, we suggest:

  • Once you accept a job offer, you are expected to withdraw completely from the job search process as rescinding a job offer is deemed unprofessional
  • Don’t falsify information such as your identity, GPA, dates of graduation, major/minor, work experience, or other information
  • If you are unable to follow through with a commitment, you must cancel 48 hours beforehand so we can notify those involved or applicable
Professionalism is a common courtesy and it helps to get on the same page with one another. If you would like to explore some more things to keep in mind when it comes to attending a career fair, check out this article.

Messaging Recruiters on Handshake & Following up after Expo

Just like with any interview, it’s always important to follow up and send a thank you note to whoever interviewed you. Career fairs are no different, and with Handshake that process can be easier. After viewing the employers in attendance from the events page, you can then go to their individual employer pages, which will have their “public staff list.” If you see your interviewer there, you can simply message them by clicking on their name and going to their page.

If you are unable to find the person who interviewed you or you forgot to get their business card, then you’ll have to take matters into your own hands and do your own research on the web. Usually, companies have a staff page on their company website or on their LinkedIn page, but here are some tips on how to find their contact information if you don’t have it.

Dealing With Rejection

In life, rejection is bound to happen and that certainly goes for job searches as well. While being cited as one of the biggest fears people face, with every failure and rejection lies the potential for growth. As you prepare for your job search, here are six lessons to learn from job rejections.

  • There’s always room for improvement
  • Confidence is essential
  • Ask more questions
  • Weaknesses can be turned into strengths
  • Always have a backup plan
  • Rejection can actually be a blessing in disguise
While we’re always here rooting for your inevitable success, sometimes learning from your shortcomings is all it takes to get you there.

Ashley Chavarria

Guest Experience Assistant

Meet Ashley Chavarria! She is a sophomore Accounting and Finance major with a minor in Business Analytics from Miami. She is a part of the Association of Commuter Students (ACS), which provides working knowledge to all its members so that they can take advantage of all the resources and involvement opportunities UM has to offer.

To her, #LevelUp means striving to be a better version of yourself, for yourself…and not for others. It’s going above and beyond what’s expected of you. She says she had to take risks and ask herself “why?” in order to #LevelUp. Asking yourself “why” aids individuals in achieving their goals because understanding “why” motivates them and allows them to be more focused on achieving their goals. In addition, taking risks allows them to go above what’s expected and gives them the extra push to success.

Piece of advice:
“Honestly, just don’t be afraid. Speak up in class, make friends, start a club, do anything! UM is super welcoming and Canes really do care for Canes. The more involved you are, the better your experience will be at the U. Also make a weekly schedule! Doing that will help you manage your time well and it will aid with future stress. They are also self-perpetuating! Once you’re in the habit, it’s a whole lot easier to just stick to your schedule. That way you will get things done and keep on going.”
