#LevelUp

Meet Lia Mussie, a sophomore Ecosystem Science and Policy + Political Science double major, with minors in Sustainable Business and Journalism!

As an Environmental Law Intern with Lean Orb, she got to read and report on local environmental policy, specifically regarding the regulation of single-use plastics and sea-level rise initiatives as it relates to climate change, interact with local officials on plastic legislation while promoting education efforts to constituents to influence action, and engage with multiple non-profits, on how to advocate for support of laws. At the same time, she was a Correspondent for the Organization of World Peace, working as a volunteer with UThrift, a mentor for the Freshman Leadership Academy of United Black Students, Director of Membership for Young and College Democrats, and the Logistics Chair for the 2022 Students of Color Symposium.

Through the Toppel Internship Fund, she was able to stay in Miami and work with a plastics-based start-up studying Florida legislation regarding plastic usage, sea level rise, and water quality, as well as work on several research projects that analyze the effects of climate change on people or communities.

Piece of Advice:

“Don't feel confined in your major, your experiences, or anything. I have worked with non-profits and NGOs, medical and environmental research, policy and law, corporate consulting, racial and social advocacy groups, and many more! Obviously, most of them do not directly pertain to my major, but each experience has given me insight and skills I will take into any and every role I have. Just because you committed to one specific path your freshman year, doesn't mean you can't shift, change, and grow; as every experience simply gives you knowledge, experience, and the opportunity for growth.”

Interning Over Winter Break

While the most popular time to pursue an internship is usually during the summer, have you ever considered applying for an internship over the winter? Winter internships can offer you a way to strengthen your resume over a short period of time, while also networking and learning new skills to help advance you in your career. With less schoolwork to do, a winter internship can even be a great choice if you don’t want to get as burned out as opposed to other times of the year when you may have a lot of other things going on.

Another thing to consider is that sometimes winter internships are likely to be less competitive than summer internships because there may be fewer applicants. While there are tradeoffs when it comes to the timing of when to do an internship, utilizing the time you have off during both breaks can be very beneficial to your career development in the long run.

Searching Events by Category on Handshake

Searching for events just got a little easier as Handshake just introduced its new feature that allows you to search events based on specific categories. When you go to the events section, you will see a filter at the top that says “categories.” By utilizing this, you are able to filter events based on:

  • Career Fairs
  • Hiring Events
  • Networking Events
  • Employer Info Sessions
  • Conferences
  • Guidance-related
  • Academic-related
  • General Interests
So if you know exactly what you're looking for, using this new feature (alongside the other filters) can really reduce the amount of time you spend as you search for events & fairs on Handshake.

Justin Valladares

Career Coach

Meet Justin Vlladares, a Junior Political Science Economics major with a minor in Philosophy, from Miami. Currently, he is a career coach here at Toppel and a part of the FEC club.

In order to achieve his goals, he says he had to relearn how to study efficiently to make sure that he has a competitive GPA while applying to law school. By doing this, he has been able to intern at law firms which have helped him familiarize himself with the legal field.

Piece of Advice:
“Make connections with professors as it is common to ask them for letters of reference when applying to jobs and post-grad education programs. Also, add a second major and minor to appear more competitive after graduation.”
