#LevelUp

Meet Joann Seunarine! She is pursuing a Master of Public Health, and a Master of Arts in Latin American Studies.

During her undergraduate education, she was able to pursue two different internships through the university. For both internships, she worked as a clinical research assistant which gave her the basis of knowledge to be able to work currently as a clinical research project manager. She says what made her experience so great was that she had bosses that supported her in her learning pursuits. Now as a project manager, she works with public health research and global health topics. She is currently the Co-President of the Public Health Association, and the Graduate Student Association Senator for Public Health. She also volunteers with a local organization in her community, called Project Libertad, and another international organization called A Breeze of Hope.

Piece of Advice:

“Pursue a passion, give yourself some weekly alone time, have faith in yourself, and most importantly, ask for help! These are probably the most important lessons I’ve had to teach myself throughout my graduate degree. Pursuing a passion within your career makes life feel like less work and more of a joy. Alone time lets you reset and recharge. Have faith in yourself because imposter syndrome is so real, but if you got accepted into grad school or got the job, that means you belong - don’t ever doubt that! And ask for help whenever in doubt, help is always there, and you can’t do everything all alone.”

Valentina De Gennaro

Career Coach

Meet Valentina De Gennaro, a Junior Biomedical Engineering major with a concentration in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering from Caracas, Venezuela.

Aside from being a career coach at Toppel, she has also been a member of the Society of Women Engineers and the Biomedical Engineering Society since her freshman year! She recently joined the Council of International Students and Organizations (COISO).

She is most looking forward to working in Dr. Huang’s lab doing research and learning new laboratory methods and techniques. In order to achieve her career goals, she said she had to #LevelUp by chasing after what she wanted and stop waiting for things to just fall into her lap.

This has led her to her internship at a biomedical engineering lab which has given her a closer insight into what her future could look like and made her realize all of the doors open to her since it is something so close to her major.

Piece of Advice:
“Just to slow down and enjoy the present. The past is in the past and you can’t change it, the future is the future and it’ll come, but the present is now and you have to make the best of it.”
