#LevelUp

Meet Fabrizio Darby, a Health Science and Biology major with minors in Chemistry and Creative Writing!

Over the summer he participated in the ENDURE Neuroscience program at Washington University in St. Louis, where he investigated the role corticosterone (a stress hormone) plays in synchronizing daily rhythms in glioblastomas (a kind of brain tumor). This opportunity allowed him to work with circadian biologist, Dr. Erik Herzog, while exploring different career paths in Neuroscience and learning about the application process for the M.D./Ph.D. path. He's currently working on his Senior Honors Thesis with UM Biologist, Dr. Julia Dallman.

If it weren't for the Toppel Internship Program, he says he would not have been able to participate in his summer experience. Toppel provided all the support he needed as an international student, ensuring that he was able to navigate the difficulty of gaining internship experiences as a foreign national. Toppel has also provided him with great resources for professional development.

Piece of Advice: “Utilize the resources available through Toppel and other areas on campus. Many of the opportunities I have gotten have been through me reaching out to the support systems around me. I would also like to emphasize the value in being brave and applying for whatever interests you. As an international student, I was told it was virtually impossible to partake in internship opportunities, especially as a premedical/STEM student. However, after many rejections I was finally able to secure an awesome experience that has truly enhanced my college career.”

Writing a Cover Letter

When it comes to applying for jobs, you may ask yourself “are cover letters necessary?” And the truth is that they can very well help you gain an edge over the competition. Cover letters provide a way to add a personal touch to a bullet-pointed resume. Not only does a cover letter give you a chance to have your voice heard, but it also serves as a way for you to explain why the skills outlined on your resume make you a great fit for the position you’re applying for.

While the fact that you’re willing to go above and beyond during the application process is noteworthy in and of itself, a cover letter also allows you to share any connections you may have with that company (such as references) and your relationship with them so that they can directly vouch for you when the time comes. Sometimes it’s tricky to know where to start, but here are some tips from Indeed on how to write a stellar cover letter. Also, remember you can stop by Toppel Monday – Friday (10 AM – 4 PM) if you want additional help with your cover letter or resume.

Updating Your Interests and Job Search Status on Handshake

Once you make your Handshake profile visible to employers, did you know that you can tailor your job search preferences to attract the opportunities that you want? When you go to your profile, scroll down and in the left column you will see a section labeled “Your Interests”. From there, you can update your job hunt status to what most accurately fits your current situation.

Under that, you will also see that you can update your interests which will help employers know what you’re looking for and allow Handshake to tailor the opportunities that they share with you. You can choose interests based on:

  • Role
  • City
  • Industry
  • Type of opprotunity
The more accurately you answer these questions, the more likely it is that your desired opportunities may come your way!

Your Major Does Not Equal Your Career

One of the most important lessons you will learn in your professional career is that your college major will not define your career path. Sometimes we may feel locked into the major we have selected, even if our interests and goals have changed. However, your career is much more flexible than you realize.

At Toppel, we will be hosting an event on Monday, Nov. 7 (6 PM – 7 PM), where you will hear from several successful UM alumni whose majors are radically different from their current roles. You will learn what it was like for these alumni to move into areas different than what they studied and how they have used their college majors as assets in their career journeys.

You will have the opportunity to connect with the alums and Toppel staff to ask the questions that matter most to you. Register on Handshake if you'd like to partake in this eye-opening event!

Makenna Parsell

Guest Experience Assistant

Meet Makenna Parsell, a sophomore Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major with minors in Gender & Sexuality Studies and Psychology who is from Columbus, Ohio!

She said she had to #LevelUp by getting out of her comfort zone! As a pretty shy person, she said she had to learn better "people skills" to help her get more opportunities and thrive in professional environments. She says that getting out of her comfort zone has allowed her to be fun and professional while working. She has gained some friends as well as opportunities like working at Toppel by simply stepping into the unknown.

Piece of Advice:
“It may sound cheesy but live like you will die tomorrow. This has helped me to live without regrets and to really cherish everyone and everything in my life.”
