#LevelUp

Meet Kofi Bame, a junior Psychology & Computer Science major with a minor in Mathematics!

He interned with a Pediatric ENT clinic as a scribe and a medical assistant in the summers following his first and second years. He would talk to patients, create patient charts, and assist in creating the patients’ treatment plan. He also assisted with in-office procedures like endoscopies and frenectomies. He was also able to shadow surgeons! He says his experiences gave him great insight into what it might look like to pursue working as a specialty physician.

He says Toppel helped him in becoming career ready by critiquing his resume and helping him to sharpen his interview skills. These were a great help in searching for internships and opportunities over the summer.

Piece of Advice:

“Get involved on campus! Extracurriculars are a way to grow your skills in a low-risk environment. Skills like leadership, communication, and working in teams are essential skills in a full-time job. Sometimes, they can be the difference between getting the job over someone else, even if you have more skill or technical experience in your field. By growing these skills at the U, I believe I’ll be able to have a smoother transition into the workplace.”

"The Strength of Weak Ties"

Some people say that real growth happens once you step out of your comfort zone, and this can especially be true when it comes to your network. Oftentimes we tend to network within our realm of familiarity, but you very much can expand your horizons by giving some focus to weak ties.

Weak ties are essentially contacts that aren’t complete strangers but are contacts that you aren’t as close with as your immediate network. One of the main benefits of relying on weak ties is that it offers a change in the type of people whom you’d usually come across.

Typically, the people within your network are a part of the same network. However, through weak ties, you are bound to come across someone who is completely out of your network and who may even provide you with some new information or an opportunity that is exactly what you’re looking for.

Viewing Reviews on Handshake

When you’re looking for a restaurant or a new product online, one of the first things you may do is look at the reviews. When it comes to employment, it should be no different since it is a place where you’ll be spending a lot of your time. Did you know that you can read the reviews that your peers leave on employers' Handshake pages?

When you go to the page of the employer of your choice, on the top of the page it will say “Reviews” and if they have any reviews, you can see what others have to say about their time there. Right next to it is also reviews of the interviews. If you have an upcoming interview with them, you can utilize that tab to gain insight into the company’s interview process so you know what to expect.

It’s the end of the semester! And between final exams, projects, work responsibilities, and trying to make memories with friends, we understand that it can be stressful for you. You can visit the Camner Center for any academic-related support or the Counseling Center for any mental health support.
