#BreakThru

Meet Donnae Farquharson! Donnae is a senior majoring in Exercise Physiology with a minor in Chemistry. She had to #BreakThru an inability to shadow physicians due to COVID-19, something she had hoped would give her insight into her field of interest. Despite these obstacles, she participated in the University of Miami Medical Scholars Fellowship Program and Toppel's Professional Development Academy: Healthcare Edition. She has also used resources like Cane2Cane to connect with alumni and find mentors.

Some advice from Donnae: Keep going! This journey was never meant to be easy but if you're passionate about your future career then you can get through it. I've had a lot of rejection along the way, but I kept fighting for my own path.

Scholarship applications for Fall 2021 are open through March 8, 2021. Winners will be announced in early May.

Best Advice?

College is stressful, but do not let yourself go. Have at least one day where you just focus on self-care.

#BreakThru Story?

As a first generation student, it was hard for me to apply to the School of Nursing & Health Studies at the University of Miami. However, I reached out to people who helped me understand the whole application process, and the career I wanted to pursue. I got accepted to the School of Nursing & Health Studies, and I am confident that I will get my Doctorate in Nursing and later open up my own clinic.
