#BreakThru

Taylor Washington is a junior majoring in Industrial Engineering, with a concentration in Management. She spent the summer as a Robotic Process Automation Intern with NextEra Energy, but the road to get there was not easy. Taylor had to #BreakThru feeling discouraged in her job search after being rejected following multiple interviews. Her perseverance resulted in an enriching remote learning opportunity.

Some advice from Taylor: “Network and participate in student organizations within your major. If I had not gone to an interest meeting put on by the Institute of Industrial and System Engineers (IISE) with NextEra, I would have never learned about this internship opportunity.”

The Virtual Fall 2020 Career Expo is fast-approaching, and you may be wondering how to prepare. The best thing you can do today is register on Handshake and then take a look at the companies and employers who will be in attendance. Make a list of the employers you want to speak with, and do some research about their products/services. Generate a few questions that you have, and think about how you can maximize your time with each employer.

Don’t forget to reserve group or individual time-slot sessions in advance, so that you are able to connect with the companies that you want to explore. This is something new this year! So instead of standing in line and waiting your turn to speak with a recruiter, you’ll now have a set time to talk with someone.

Make sure to mark your calendars too!! Virtual Fall 2020 Career Expo is on Wednesday, September 30th from 1:00-5:00 PM.

Best Advice?

The path of others is not the path that you are destined to follow. There are different roads and obstacles that you will face, and multiple destinations you can get to, so do not compare your failures or successes with anyone else.

#BreakThru Story?

I used to have a mindset that I had to be on the same high level as everyone else or be as advanced and clever as my peers. Once I let that go, I found peace in doing what is best for myself and becoming better at certain things on my own time. I created my own nail business and taught myself how to do different types of nails. Now, I am starting to take on clients, and I use a lot of my own creations such as stickers and details to decorate their nails!
