#GoalDiggin

Meet Isaac Attuah, a sophomore international student from Accra, Ghana majoring in Computer Science. Attuah has been #GoalDiggin through his Developer Student Club Lead position with Google. Attuah shares, “My role as a DSC Lead is to oversee a college version of Google's developer groups dubbed Developer Student Club. I, alongside my amazing team, organize workshops in coding and cloud technology. I also work with Google Developer Organizations like Google Developer Group Miami (GDG Miami) and Women Techmakers to host workshops and share technology resources with Google students. As part of my initial training, I got to spend last Fall Break at Google’s HQ 2 and Googleplex campus and that was definitely mind-blowing for me!"

Attuah explains how Toppel helped him become career ready, “I got my first internship with the UM PCI Compliance Office because of Handshake. It’s definitely a tool I’ve been using for my internship search, especially for this summer. I also participated in the Professional Development Academy at Toppel last semester and that gave me a lot of exposure to many concepts including personal branding, workplace etiquette, and utilizing LinkedIn for good connections."

Some advice from Attuah: “Never forget where you came from. The opportunity to attend UM is indeed incredible and I believe the knowledge we gain here is definitely applicable in our home communities, cities, and countries. I believe the hard work of many other people has put me in this position today, so I have to empower others to do great stuff too.”

Staying organized during your job search

Although Handshake is a great resource when researching and applying for jobs and internships, it can sometimes still be difficult to keep track of all your applications and their deadlines in an efficient way.

Below are some tips on how to stay organized when searching for jobs and internships on Handshake:

  • Use the “Employers” tab to look up companies and click “Follow” to save those that are of interest to you. These employers will then show up under “Following” on the left-hand side.
  • Use filters to search for jobs and click the star next to the position title to “favorite” the ones you’re considering applying to. This makes it easier to come back to those jobs later and apply to them.
  • Make of list of the jobs you want to apply to, taking note of their application deadlines, interview dates, and the materials you need to submit (resume, cover letter, etc.)
  • Keep track of your submitted applications and their status under the “Applications” tab
  • Check your notifications and messages daily for any updates.

Have you ever found yourself freezing up or in an awkward silence at a networking event? Instead of falling back on a bland conversation about the weather, this article suggests you start asking people unexpected, thought-provoking questions that couldn’t be answered with a simple yes or no. This not only makes the conversation more fun and memorable, but also allows you to learn cool facts about other people that you probably never would have gotten from a “normal” conversation!

Are you still trying to figure out how you can be #GoalDiggin this summer? Hero University is running a 6-week purpose-driven entrepreneurship program this summer from June 22nd-July 31st, 2020 to teach students how to create an impact and work with a group of like-minded students on some of the world's most salient problems. Students would have the opportunity to discover new cultures, learn how to make an impact, and explore if entrepreneurship is a potential career path after college. This pathway typically has a lot of uncertainty and they give students a testing ground to remove a lot of the risk.

If this opportunity looks interesting to you, apply now for the chance of receiving a full scholarship. Applications close on March 15th, 2020.

The Department of Public health Sciences at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine will be hosting their annual Spring Open House on Thursday, February 27 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at UM’s Shalala Student Center. Their Spring Open House is a great opportunity for students that are pursuing medical or health sciences degrees that may also be interested in public health like Biostatistics, Environment and Public Health, Epidemiology and Population Health Sciences, Health Services Policy and Research, and Prevention Science and Community Health. At this event, you will be able to interact with faculty, alumni, and current students, to learn more about opportunities within the program, and the future of a public health degree in the 21st century.

If you are planning on attending, make sure to RSVP.

Devin Rogan

Associate Director Employer Engagement

My name is Devin Rogan and I currently serve as the Associate Director for Employer Engagement at the Toppel Career Center. In this role, I am responsible for developing relationships with employers and assisting in job development efforts by conducting consistent outreach and marketing. I am excited about this position because it allows me the opportunity to strengthen relationships with employers and expand the UM network, which in return, will create more opportunities for our students! I’ve lived in Miami for the past five years, but I am originally from New Jersey (best state in the U.S.). I am married to my high school sweetheart and enjoy spending time with family, hanging out with friends, playing sports, and traveling. My one piece of advice for students is to utilize the resources available to you on campus. Whether it’s the Career Center, Student Affairs, the Academic Center, and so much more, you can always find the support you need at any time.
